Ikariam is a real-time browser game created by Gameforge AG. It was first released publicly in 2008. The game is free to play, with optional "bonuses" available to be purchased. Ikariam focuses on developing and colonizing medieval towns and forging alliances with other players, though combat does exist. The gameplay is similar to other client-based games, including Age of Empires and Civilization.

Ikariam, like most Gameforge creations, is available in many languages. Each language has its own servers and worlds, and players cannot interact between servers. All Ikariam servers run the same version of the game, except during updates.

[edit] Gameplay

Each player starts with one city, located on a random island in a world they choose. Islands consist of two resources: wood and a luxury resource, which is wine, marble, crystal glass, or sulphur. Players can assign workers from their city to acquire the resource, at a rate of approximately 1-600 per hour. Resources are acquired in real time, so 120 wood per hour means two wood per minute. These resources are then used to build and upgrade a variety of buildings within the city.

[edit] Research

Research is crucial in order to advance one's city. There are four categories of research: military, science, economy, and seafaring. Each category has 12-15 topics, that each provide a unique bonus to the game. The topics take progressively more time to research, ranging from less than an hour to almost a year.

[edit] Colonization

Once of the main focuses of Ikariam is colonization. When a player builds a palace in his capital, he is entitled to make one colony for each level of his palace. Each additional city shares gold and cargo ships with the capital, but has its own supply of resources. Colonies can also have additional academies, which all contribute to the same research.

[edit] Rules

The game is moderated by Game Operators, Super Game Operators, and Game Administrators, in order of rank. All three have the power to ban users from the game. Game Administrators also are the link between the users/moderators and the programmers at Gameforge. All of the moderator types are volunteer positions.
