[edit] Roles in battle

As i always understood, the role of the Hastati was to bring the enemy front line to a standstill and create some gaps in the enemy lines and then the Principes were expected to take over and do most of the fighting and win the battle, with the Triarii as a reserve shock troop.

The way I understood it though, would be that the Hastati were the least experienced (and the poorest) out of all of them, and that they would sometimes be overcome by the enemy. Thus, they would fall back onto the principes, and regroup behind. I pretty much agree with the taking over part though, and I definitely agree with you that the Triarii are reserve shock troops (sort of) hence the phrase "going to the triarii," meaning that you will continue to the end, in desperation.
