The Prix d'Ispahan is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds which are four-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 1,850 metres (approximately 1 mile and 1¼ furlongs) at Longchamp Racecourse and takes place annually, presently in May.
It was first run on July 13, 1873 as the showpiece race of a meeting to honour the Shah of Persia, Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, who was making an official visit to Paris. The title of the race, Ispahan, is the French name for Esfahān, capital city of Persia from 1598 to 1722.
The first running was over a distance of 3,000 metres, which was cut to 2,400 metres the following year. It was further reduced to 2,200 metres in 1891, to 2,100 metres in 1903 and to the present length in 1921. It has remained at this distance with the exception of three occasions when the venue was transferred – to Tremblay in 1943 and 1944 over 2,000 metres and to Chantilly in 1991 over 1,800 metres.
Originally open to three-year-olds and above, the race was restricted to older horses from 1987. It was opened to geldings in 2001.
