The Prix Penelope is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 2,100 metres (approximately 1 mile 2½ furlongs) at Saint-Cloud Racecourse and takes place annually in early April.
It was first run in 1905 and is named in honour of both Penelope (GB) (b. 1798), an important British broodmare, and Penelope (FR) (b. 1820), a prominent winner in France. The race originally took place at Maisons-Laffitte, transferring briefly in 1921 for a single running at Saint-Cloud, and moving more permanently to the latter venue in 1927. During World War II the race was held at Longchamp from 1940 to 1942 and at Maisons-Laffitte from 1943 to 1945.
The race was contested over 2,000 metres until 1943, and following some slight variations the present distance was set in 1950.
