Prix La Rochette
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Prix La Rochette is a Group 3 flat horse race in France for two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 1,400 metres (approximately 7 furlongs) at Longchamp Racecourse in September.
It was inaugurated in 1882 at Fontainebleau Racecourse as the first part of the Prix Triennal, with the second part for three-year-olds starting in 1883, and the third for four-year-olds in 1884. The races were re-named in 1889 following the death of Baron Charles de La Rochette, a leading figure in French racing.
Now a single race for two-year-olds, the Prix La Rochette has changed venue several times since first moving to Longchamp in 1892. The most recent time away was from 1997 to 2000 when it was held at Chantilly Racecourse. On its return to Longchamp in 2001 the present distance was introduced, having been run at 1,600 metres since 1970, and various shorter distances before that.
