Privy Council (Thailand)

The Privy Council is the royally-appointed group of advisors of the King of Thailand. Privy Councillors can, under royal command, represent the King at official functions. Other important functions include drafting amendments to the Palace Law regarding royal succession. The President of the Privy Council acts as regent pro tempore in the King's absence.[1]
King Bhumibol's Privy Council as of 2005 was composed mostly of retired military leaders and members of the royal family. They were:
- General Prem Tinsulanonda, (Thai: เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ ), President of the Privy Council
- General Surayud Chulanont (Thai: สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์ ), later appointed Prime Minister after the 2006 military coup
- Dr. Chaovana Nasylvanta (Thai: เชาวน์ ณ ศีลวันต์), also Director of the Crown Property Bureau
- Tanin Kraivixien (Thai: ธานินทร์ กรัยวิเชียร)
- Rear Admiral Mom Luang Usni Pramoj (Thai: อัศนี ปราโมช)
- Air Vice Marshal Kamthon Sindhavananda (Thai: กำธน สินธวานนท์)
- Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila (Thai: สิทธิ เศวตศิลา )
- Chulanope Snidvongs Na Ayuthaya (Thai: จุลนภ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา), also Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Royal Development Study Centers
- General Pichitr Kullavanijaya (Thai: พิจิตร กุลละวณิชย์ )
- Ampol Senanarong (Thai: อำพล เสนาณรงค์ )
- Chamras Kemacharu (Thai: จำรัส เขมะจารุ )

In recent years, the Privy Council president plays a dominant part in the Thai politics. He was alleged to be hehind the bloodless military coup that toppled the people-installed government Thaksin Shinawatra. Prem appeared before the scene a few days after the coup, a move seen to manipulate the country with military power. Prem appeared in full sense of his involvment in politics when he came out defy any threatening violence during the New Year festival,which the bureacrats and high-ranking military who staged the coup accused Thaksin behind.
Prem is an old-fasioned soilder who receives respects from military and middle-class including university lecturers who believe the personality of this person is their role model or an idol. This leads to an illusory image of democracy.
