In recent years, the Privy Council president plays a dominant part in the Thai politics. He was alleged to be hehind the bloodless military coup that toppled the people-installed government Thaksin Shinawatra. Prem appeared before the scene a few days after the coup, a move seen to manipulate the country with military power. Prem appeared in full sense of his involvment in politics when he came out defy any threatening violence during the New Year festival, which the bureacrats and high-ranking military who staged the coup accused Thaksin behind.

Prem is an old-fasioned soilder who receives respects from military and middle-class including university lecturers who believe the personality of this person is their role model or an idol. This leads to an illusory image of democracy.
