TV.com summary

Private Practice is a spin-off of the popular television show, Grey's Anatomy. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the series chronicles the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery as she leaves Seattle Grace Hospital for Los Angeles in order to join a private practice. Rhimes also serves as executive producer alongside Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Mark Tinker and Marti Noxon; the latter serving as showrunner in lieu of Rhimes' duties on Grey's Anatomy.[1] The backdoor pilot which aired on May 3, 2007 was directed by Michael Grossman.[2] Produced by ABC Studios, The Mark Gordon Company and Shondaland Productions, the series was officially greenlit and given a thirteen-episode order on May 11, 2007.[3] It aired on Wednesday nights on 9:00PM Eastern/8:00PM Central. Due to the Writers Guild of America strike, the show only completed a production of 9 from the 13 ordered episodes for its first season. On October 18, 2007, ABC ordered a full season for the show, completing a total of 22 episodes for its first season. The show premiered on September 26, 2007 on ABC, following Dancing with the Stars whilst leading out Dirty Sexy Money.[4]

Private Practice was shown in encores on Thursday nights at 10:00PM Eastern/9:00PM Central following Grey's Anatomy due to the hiatus/cancellation of Big Shots.[5]

On February 11, 2008, ABC picked up Private Practice for the 2008-09 television season. With this, the show completes a second season of 22 new episodes plus 13 more remaining from the first season.[6]

On April 25, 2008, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced a DVD release. Private Practice: The Complete First Season – Extended Edition — a DVD set including all 9 original episodes and exclusive bonus features including bloopers, audio commentary, deleted scenes, two extended episodes, featurettes and more. — is scheduled for release September 16, 2008.[2]

[edit] Production history

[edit] Origins

On February 21, 2007, The Wall Street Journal reported that ABC was pursuing a spin-off of Grey's Anatomy featuring Kate Walsh's character Addison Montgomery.[10] Subsequent reports affirmed the report, stating that an expanded two-hour broadcast of Grey's Anatomy (which aired May 3, 2007) would serve as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff. The backdoor pilot episode features Montgomery on leave from Seattle Grace Hospital, the clinic in Los Angeles is named the Oceanside Wellness Centre.[11] The broadcast served as the 22nd and 23rd episodes of the season (out of 25), and was directed by Michael Grossman, according to Variety.[12] Gossip columnists Kristin Veitch and Michael Ausiello reported that the spinoff would be set in Los Angeles.[13][14]

[edit] Broadcast history

On May 3, 2007, the backdoor pilot of Private Practice aired on ABC, the pilot was in the double episode of Grey's Anatomy entitled "The Other Side of This Life", and gave a brief description of the characters in Private Practice. The cast included Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy), Paul Adelstein (Prison Break), Tim Daly (Wings, The Nine, The Sopranos), Taye Diggs (Kevin Hill, Day Break, Rent), Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars, Life As We Know It) and Merrin Dungey (Alias, Summerland).

The 2-hour episode averaged 21 million viewers, 1.9 million more viewers than Grey's Anatomy's third season 19.1 million viewers-per-episode average at the time of its airing. The episode was also #1 in the 9pm and 10pm timeslots.[15] However, the high ratings could simply be due to Grey's Anatomy's popularity, considering the previews for the episode failed to indicate there would be a back-door pilot.

On May 15, 2007, ABC announced that Private Practice would be a part of ABC's fall primetime schedule. The first television promotion for the series aired during the season finale of Grey's Anatomy.

The series premiere aired on September 26, 2007 averaging 14.41 million viewers being the most watched show in its time slot.

[edit] Casting

On June 29, 2007 it was announced by ABC that Merrin Dungey, who played the role of Naomi Bennett, would be replaced by four time Tony winner Audra McDonald. ABC gave no reason for this change.[16] On July 11, 2007, it was announced that a new character, played by KaDee Strickland, had been added to the main cast.[17]

[edit] Location

Private Practice films a lot of their exterior shots (as well as some of their outdoor storylines) in Santa Monica, California. The Oceanside Group building can be found at the corner of 4th and Wilshire in Santa Monica, California. It is actually a bank.

[edit] Season One (2007-2008)

Private Practice has been picked up for a full season order as of October 19, 2007.[18]

The show was renewed for a second season on February 11 by ABC, along with fellow freshmen series "Pushing Daisies", "Samantha Who?", and "Dirty Sexy Money". [19]

[edit] Reception

Private Practice's first episode was somewhat panned by critics. Variety noted that "Private Practice isn't a full-fledged screw-up, certainly, but so far it is a serious letdown"[20], and the New York Times described the show's characters as "collectively offer[ing] one of the most depressing axe wound portrayals of the female condition since The Bell Jar."[21]

Private Practice won second place in the ABC ratings on Wednesday nights and won its time slot to become the most watched season premiere so far for this season.[22][23]

[edit] DVD release

Private Practice: The Complete First Season – Extended Edition will be released on Region 1 DVD on September 16, 2008. The DVD collection will include all 9 episodes from the First Season.[24]
