Princess Anne High School (PAHS) is the oldest remaining high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States. Opened in 1954, the school is now one of 11 high schools in Virginia Beach. In addition to serving regularly zoned students, the school hosts a citywide center for students with moderate to severe disabilities (known as the "West Building"), the citywide International Baccalaureate program, and a citywide center for pregnant teenagers (The "PA Center"). The school is also one of few high schools in Virginia Beach featuring an NJROTC program. Princess Anne was ranked by Newsweek at #143 in its 2003 U.S. high school rankings, and is currently one of five Virginia Beach high schools ranked in the top 1200 in Newsweek's 2006 rankings.[1][2]

[edit] September 1, 1995 Fire
Four days before the opening of school in September 1995 a fire destroyed approximately one-third of the building. The fire began in the library, destroying numerous valuable records in the blaze -- among them the entire collection of PA yearbooks before 1995 and numerous printed and digital course materials collected by teachers throughout their careers.
Throughout both the 1995-1996 school year and the 1996-1997 fall semester, classes were held in a nearby vacant shopping mall which has since been replaced by a Home Depot. Buses transported students between the temporary location and portable classrooms on the main campus.
Following the fire, the 900 hall (which had been under construction prior to the fire) opened in January 1996. Meanwhile, the fire-damaged 200 hallway in the front of the building was entirely rebuilt along with the library. As a result of the fire, the PA library now maintains one of the most extensive and up-to-date media collections of any Virginia Beach high school. A new wing for art classes and studios was also opened behind the administrative offices.
The school reopened in January 1997 and a dedication was held on May 4, 1997.[3]
