Merlin returns to his birthplace in the Courts of Chaos in order to solve the existential riddle in which he is involved. He realizes he is but a pawn in the hands of the powerful and cynical superpowers that rule the universe.
Merlin becomes the new king of Chaos and is reunited with his father, Corwin.
In the Courts of Chaos, Merlin uses all his magical powers in the final fight for survival.
