Prince Royal of Portugal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prince Royal of Portugal (or more formally Prince Royal of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves) is the official title attributed to the heirs presumptive of the Crown of Portugal. From Manuel II's death, the last king of Portugal, the title of Prince Royal has been used by the pretender to the Portuguese throne and Heads of the Royal House of Braganza.
The title was created in 1815 when John VI (at the time Prince-Regent) elevated colonial Brazil to the status of kingdom inside the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves (thus forcing the extinction of the until then used title Prince of Brazil). The heir became the Prince Royal of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves. When Brazil declared its independence, the title was changed to the current state.
The holders of the title were styled Royal Highness (HRH) and were also Dukes of Braganza, Dukes of Guimarães, Dukes of Barcelos, Marquesses of Vila Viçosa, Counts of Arraiolos, Counts of Ourém, Counts of Barcelos, Counts of Faria, Counts of Neiva and Counts of Guimarães.
