[edit] Apertura

This article contains the details of the Apertura 2007 Chilean Football Tournament. This is a current sport event.

The winner of the Tournament will play the 2008 edition of Copa Libertadores de América and additionally, the four teams that will face each other in the Copa Sudamericana Qualification Tournament.

The tournament is based in the typical Apertura-Clausura scheme used in many football leagues in Latin-America, similar to the Argentinian First Division Football Tournament. Chile typically uses the Mexican format, but due to Copa América 2007 tournament occurring this year, and only for the Apertura will be used the argentinian format.

The tournament comprises 21 teams from the Chilean First División. It was supposed to include only 20 teams, but a dispute between the ANFP (Chilean Professional Football Association) and the club Deportes Concepción, who didn't play in the First Division Tournament in 2006 due to a not-paying-salary restriction and was supposed to play in the Chilean Second Division in 2007. Deportes Concepción finally won the dispute and was able to play in the First Division. Thus, the format will be 21 matchdays with 1 team not playing on each matchday (and just once) during the tournament.

[edit] Clausura

The Clausura is Chilean football's "closing" tournament to determine the champion. The first fixtures took place on Saturday, July 21, 2007. Colo-Colo is the defending champions after winning the previous tournament. Different than the Apertura 2007, the twenty-one first division teams are divided into three groups of five and one group of six with the top two teams of each group making the playoffs. Normally only twenty teams compete in first division, but a dispute between the ANFP(Chilean Professional Football Association) and the club Deportes Concepción prior to the apertura tournament led to the team's inclusion in First Division. Deportes Concepción did not play in the First Division Tournament in 2006 due to a not-paying-salary restriction and was supposed to play in the Chilean Second Division in 2007. The format will be 21 matchdays with a different team receiving a bye each matchday.
