Prime Minister's Strategy Unit

The Prime Minister's Strategy Unit (now known simply as The Strategy Unit) provides the UK Prime Minister with in-depth strategy advice and policy analysis on key priorities. It has three primary roles:
- carrying out strategy reviews and providing policy advice in accordance with the PM's policy priorities
- supporting Government Departments in developing effective strategies and policies
- conducting occasional strategic audits, and identifying key challenges for the UK Government (see the UK Strategic Audit 2005 below).
Due to its strong links with Number 10 Downing Street it is often erroneously referred to in the media as the No 10 Strategy Unit, however it is formally part of the Cabinet Office and reports through the Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell. It has a complement of around forty-five staff. On a day-to-day level it works closely with the Number 10 Policy Unit, which is headed by Dan Corry. While there is no direct equivalent in other countries, the PMSU has many functions that overlap with the Executive Office of the President of the United States.
Stephen Aldridge CB is the current Director. The previous Director was Geoff Mulgan.
It is based in the Admiralty Arch, part of the Cabinet Office's buildings in Whitehall.
