Primary State Highway 1, the Pacific Highway, was a highway in the state of Washington, U.S.A., from 1937 to 1964. The Pacific Highway was the primary north-south route through Washington, with the main (trunk) route of the highway extending from Blaine in the south through Vancouver in thesouth, terminating at the Oregon state line.
PSH 1 was originally established as "State Road No. 1" by the state legislature in stages between 1905 and 1909. State Road No. 1 would later share its routing with portions of two major highways: US 99 for the state road's entire length and the I-5 at various portions. State Road No. 1 was designated Primary State Highway 1 by the state legislature when it created the primary and secondary state highways systems in 1937. When commissioned, PSH 1 coincided with U.S. Route 99 for all of its length. By the early 1940s, US 99 between Everett and Tacoma had been rerouted onto the more western alignment currently used by SR 99; the western route was initially designated Alternate US 99 and then, in 1964, SR 99.
In South Everett, PSH 1 turned southwest and followed Everett Mall Way on a diagonal course through the South Everett Commercial Area, turning south on Evergreen Way. Then stays on SR 99 until Fife. While in Fife PSH 1 becomes the Pacific Hwy. SR 99 goes onto I-5
Highways in Washington were renumbered in 1964, and PSH 1 was removed from the state highway system. Today, PSH 1 is I-5, SR 99, and other state routes.

[edit] PSH 1 Truck Route
PSH 1 Truck goes from PSH 1 in Bellingham up to the Canadian border. The route is now SR 543. SR 543 carries all commercial vehicles crossing the US-Canada border.
[edit] PSH 1 AP (Austin Pass/Mount Baker Highway)
PSH 1 AP goes from PSH 1 in Bellingham towards Mount Baker. It connects Bellingham to towns in eastern Whatcom County and the Mount Baker Ski Area. It is now SR 542.
[edit] PSH 1 CD (Chuckanut Drive)
PSH 1 CD goes from PSH 1 in Bellingham going south on a coastal route with beautiful scenery. PSH 1 CD originally met PSH 1 in downtown Bellingham; it was later realigned to meet Interstate 5 east of the Fairhaven Historic District. PSH 1 CD follows the main railroad line from Vancouver, BC to Seattle. PSH 1 CD comes back to PSH 1 in Northern Burlington at a junction with the North Cascades Highway (SR 20). PSH 1 CD is now SR 11.[1]
[edit] PSH 1 AN (Anacortes)
PSH 1 AN goes from PSH 1 in Mount Vernon going northwest then west to the North Cascades Highway and Anacortes. It is currently SR 536 from Mount Vernon to the North Cascades Highway. From there, it is SR 20 until Anacortes city limits. Then, it becomes SR 20 Spur through Anacortes to the Washington State Ferries terminal at Shannon Point.
[edit] PSH 1 MA (Marysville)
PSH 1 MA goes from PSH 1 in Marysville going east to the gap. Then, you skip over the gap and continue to SSH 1A in Lake Stevens. The gap was filled in the 1980’s. PSH 1 MA is now SR 528.
[edit] PSH 1 RE (Renton Freeway)
PSH 1 RE goes from PSH 1 in Lynnwood/Alderwood Manor going to PSH 1 again in Tukwila. PSH 1 RE bypasses Seattle to the east of Lake Washington. PSH 1 RE connects several Seattle suburbs. PSH 1 RE crosses PSH 1 EP, US 10, PSH 2, PSH 2 BO, and PSH 2 BO. PSH 1 RE became US 99E and now is I-405.
[edit] PSH 1 WM (West Marginal Branch)
PSH 1 WM was a freeway (Originally US 99 Temp.) goes from PSH 1 south of Seattle down to Des Moines at the current I-5. PSH1 WM became SR 599, which is a freeway.
[edit] PSH 1 EP (Evergreen Point)
PSH 1 EP goes from PSH 1 in Seattle going east to the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge. Then you go through Clyde Hill/Medina/Bellevue to PSH 1 RE in Bellevue. PSH 1 EP openned in 1963 when the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge was completed. PSH 1 EP replaced ferry routes between Medina and Seattle, and Kirkland and Seattle. The Medina ferry terminal became a park and Medina City Hall. PSH 1 EP is now SR 520.
[edit] PSH 1 East Vancouver Bypass (No official name)
PSH 1 Bypass opened in 1980. It became I-205 from I-5 to the state line.
[edit] PSH 1 DC (Duwamish Connection/Boeing Access Rd.)
PSH 1 DC links PSH 1 with PSH 2 RE to Boeing Field. It is now part of SR 181.
