Welcome to PrestonH's userpage

PrestonH is taking a long wikibreak and will be back on Wikipedia up until summer. I obviously have a wikiaddiction, and need to make my social life a priority (plus I need to focus on my education and stuff which means doing homework and assignments from school). I will make tiny edits on the weekdays, with heavy editing on the weekends and during the holidays. I may not respond to talk pages as timely as possible.

About Me

Hi, I'm Preston, and I've been a member of Wikipedia since September 2006. I am currently living in California. I have been contributing to Wikipedia for a year and have edited some of the articles in Wikipedia. I will revert vandalism, poor editing, and grammar problems during my stay. These are some of my personal things I like.

Articles I'm working on: None (reverting vandalism, fixing grammar, sometimes at WP:RFPP)

Edit rate on Wikipedia: 4-100 edits a day (edit rate may be very low because of school-related stress or I'm having a very hard time removing vandalism)

Wikipediholic score: 4808 (will update time to time)

How I think about Wikipedia/Criticisms to deal with: Wikipedia is a great website filled with a diverse community. The community here is fairly good at handling disputes at and the quality of Wikipedia is above average. The way they handle vandals is also above average by the way. Two major problems have occurred though, and that is handling backlogs and the treatment of newcomers here. There is a huge backlog here that is increasing at a steady rate, and I personally believe that most of the community should devote their time eliminating backlogs to create higher quality articles. The treatment of newcomers is poor to mediocre, and a mere fraction of the community (estimated 2-5%) is dedicated to guide newcomers. They almost never get welcomed, feel that this website is unfriednly,unwelcome etc. I feel that newcomers could bring a lot of knowledge, and I encourage my fellow Wikipedians to welcome and guide them through the path of the Wikipedian life until the end. I would rate Wikipedia 4 stars out of 5, given by the greatness of the site and the problems between it.

Things I'm worried about Wikipedia: Even if I'm an active contributor these are some of the criticisms of Wikipedia I think of.

  • Although Wikipedia has millions of user accounts, some of them are sockpuppets or vandals, some are inactive, some don't edit at all, some only made a few edits and depart, and only about a handful of all of these users made over 100 edits.
  • Out of all of the million articles I see, only 1 in 450 (guessing) are above Good article status.

Making good counter-examples of these criticisms I think of would be highly helpful because it would make me think how better Wikipedia is. Please make counter-examples on my talk page.

Note(s): Doing some regular vandal-fighting, grammar fixing, and partivipating in XfDs.

Edits I made: I originally planned that I'm going to correct grammar on articles but on this website I made other various edits. Now I'm vandal-fighting, fixing grammar etc. because...

  • I want to expand my editing skills
  • Doing one thing alone can get boring sometimes.

Please note that I skim articles quickly (but in the more recent months, a little slower) and may not always revert obvious vandalism. Also note that even if you blank pages with no intention I may assume it's vandalism so try to be careful editing (Remember:Be Bold!).

How I discovered Wikipedia

I was an ordinary kid who was always looking for information on the Sonic the Hedgehog series and other video-game characters. Then during fall/winter 2005 I was looking up Miles "Tails" Prower on Google and found Wikipedia. I began to be very interested in this site and when I 1st came to Wikipedia it had 800,000 articles. My first edit was on January/February 2006 under my IP address. Then in September 2006, I created my log-in account and became an active contributor. At first, I just fixed up grammar but I also do bigger tasks such as reverting vandalism. I do not wish to be an admin due to complications I may take.

Moral of this story: You can find Wikipedia easily if you do a web search.

How I think about vandalism/Advice for newcomers

I will not tolerate vandalism in any way. However, I can accept good-faith edits by both IP addresses and newcomers. Please note that if you're a vandal please stop vandalizing pages because vandalizing is pointless and hundreds of thousands of contributors will revert vandalism within minutes. Also because you'll get into lots in trouble (such as blocking) if you vandalize and creating a new log-in account in an attempt to escape the block won't work. Newcomers, if I revert your edits, don't be upset. Please understand that we (hundreds of thousands of conributors) are trying to make an article better and you can too! Don't be afraid to update pages just because someone reverts your edits (or your just shy). Remember: Be Bold!. Remember if you have questions, ask these questions on my talk page.
