Started adding info on IEEE P802.1AS which uses PTP protocol, but at IEEE 802 Layer 2 instead of over Layer 3 Internet Protocol --Abartky 00:09, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] merger

This article, and IEEE1588 Clock Synchronization appear to cover exactly the same topic. Is there any reason they can't be merged or one of them deleted? Wrs1864 (talk) 18:27, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Agreed, this is clearly the same topic and Precicion Time Protocol (PTP) is the more commonly used name. Markus Kuhn (talk) 12:34, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Agreed, the Precision Time Protocol article is closer to the reality of the 1588 standard. The 1588 article focusses on Caesium clocks, which to my understanding is not the point of 1588. Instead, the point is to have very accurate timing (to the 10s of nsecs) over a 100 meters of ethernet. The network has its own sense of time, which may or may not be syncronized to any particular global time. In addition, the IEEE articles usually have a title like IEEE 1588, see the IEEE page. IEEE 1588 redirects to the Precision Time Protocol page, as it should. Cxbrx (talk) 18:15, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I went ahead and merged these. I couldn't find much in the article worth saving, but I would appreciate someone double checking to make sure I got it right. Wrs1864 (talk) 13:45, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
