Alison knew each of the four girls' secrets, and was involved in a scandal dubbed The Jenna Thing. When Alison goes missing, the four friends thought their secrets were safe and began separate from each other. However, when they are finally reunited, they begin to receive strange emails, notes, and letters from someone named 'A'. The four books are about discovering who killed Allison, how A knows all their secrets, and most of all, who 'A' is.

[edit] Main Characters
Alison DiLaurentis: 'Ali'. The leader of the girls' clique in 7th grade. She knew everyone one of the girl's secrets and was better than all of the girls at everything. She was at one time considered to be "A," but soon they realized she wasn't. She and Spencer always had a love-hate relationship. She was the most popular of them all, but she ended up missing after running out on a sleepover and was eventually found dead three years later. She had been buried under the cement patio her parents had been working on before her disappearance, which they realized had been filled in the day after her disappearance. Her decomposed body is discovered when Maya St. Germain's family removed the patio to build a tennis court.
Aria Montgomery: On her return from Iceland, where she moved after Ali vanished, Aria meets and hooks up with a man, Ezra Fitz, who she meets at a bar called 'Snookers.' When the first day of school comes, she finds out Ezra is her AP English teacher, and he finds out she is not a graduate school student. She has kept a secret for her father for four years, but eventually 'A' later exposes this secret to Mrs. Montgomery. Her father, Byron, moves out because of it. She is eventually kicked out of her house by Mrs. Montgomery, because her mother is upset that Aria did not tell her that her father was cheating with his student, Meredith. Once kicked out, Aria moves in with Sean Ackard, who is Hanna's ex-boyfriend. However, she ends up visiting Ezra the night of Mona Vanderwaal's 17th birthday party. She wakes up next to Ezra in his bedroom, and shortly after, police break down the door to Ezra's apartment and arrest him. Aria finds Sean in the hallway, where he shows her pictures of her and Ezra kissing in his classroom (from A), and she finds out that Sean was the one who called the cops. She was kicked out of Sean's, and had to resort to staying in a local 24 hour diner.
Spencer Hastings 'Spence': Spencer's list of activities is longer than the Iliad. Yearbook staff, school plays, field hockey ... and murderer? Sure, the little overachiever knows her SAT words by heart, but her memory's kind of fuzzy when it comes to the night Allison disappeared. She remembers that she and Ali had an explosive fight but what happened next is anyone's guess... Later on, she ends up cheating on essays and trying to out shine her sister. But, things take a turn for the worse, and she is in deeper than before. She is suspected as the killer of Ali at the end of book three. Her life worsens when her parents and sister find out she has been fooling around with her sisters college boyfriend, which causes them to shun and ignore her.
Emily Fields 'Em': A swimmer and the sweetest of them all. When the new girl in town, Maya, moves into Alison's old house, Emily realizes Maya is a bisexual and has fallen in love with Emily. Slowly, Emily realizes that she loves Maya as well, but she doesn't want anyone to know because it would ruin her 'image.' At the annual Kahn party (a large field party at popular Noel Kahn's house that everyone remotely popular attends), Emily's boyfriend Ben finds her in a photo booth kissing Maya. Ben threatens to expose her secret. Eventually Emily and Maya go out in secret, but when warned by a text message (from A) about not informing police about A's threats, she refuses to listen. She makes up her mind about telling police officer Darren Wilden. But before she has the chance to, 'A' puts pictures of her kissing Maya in the photo booth at the party. The photos have the caption 'LOOK WHAT EMILY FIELDS HAS BEEN PRACTICING WHEN SHE'S NOT IN THE POOL!' Emily is humiliated, but her horror worsens when she sees her parents looking at the photos. Her mother gives her a choice to enter a program titled "Tree Tops", dedicated to turning gays straight, or being sent to her anti-sexual aunt's farm in Des Moines, Iowa. Emily attends Tree Tops, but is reprimanded by her parents at Mona Vanderwaal's birthday party, when 'A' informs her parents that she is kissing Maya there.
Hanna Marin: 'Han': In the beginning of the year, Hanna is the most popular girl in Rosewood, along with her friend Mona. When her parents went through a divorce when she was younger, she carried a lot of stress with her, resulting in overeating. Ali always teased her about it and played on her weaknesses. However, she undergoes a makeover leaving her slim and more beautiful than ever. She and Mona vowed to become popular and pretty by giving themselves makeovers and losing weight. However, Alison teased Hanna so much she became bulimic to ward off the extra pounds. She often shoplifts, and even totaled her boyfriend's father's BMW because he--Sean, her boyfriend--didn't sleep with her. Her mother ignores her most days, but will do anything to keep her out of trouble, including sleeping with a police officer when Hanna gets caught stealing. 'A' threatens Hanna with her eating disorder secret and taunts her with details about her father's new life with his fiance Isabel and her perfect daughter Kate. At Mona Vanderwaal's birthday party, she is publicly embarrassed. She seeks solace in Lucas, a nerd, whom Hanna realizes is not the person she thought he was. Even though he wasn't perfect in her sense of handsome and rich, she finds he is perfect for her. While Lucas comforts her after her embarrassment, she receives a text from 'A'. She sees that the number is not a scramble of letters and numbers and is in fact, a number she recognizes. She rushes to meet her old best friends to tell them about it. But before she can, 'A' hits her with an SUV at a frightening speed. She is left in coma.
[edit] Other Characters
A: A creepy stalker who knows all of the girls' secrets, and threatens (and does throughout the course of the books), to expose them. 'A' sends all the girls text messages, e-mails, and notes. In Unbelievable, A is revealed to be Mona Vanderwaal. After her death, though, the after-note states that A is a new person.
Mike Montgomery: Aria Montgomery's little brother. Mike usually hides his feelings from his family, but occasionally tells Aria how he really feels. At the end of Perfect, he is avoiding Aria for not telling him about his dad cheating on his mom.
Jenna Cavanaugh: A former resident of Rosewood, she was blinded by a fireworks shot by Alison. Nonetheless, it is later revealed Alison and Jenna planned the fireworks accident to hit Toby but it was only an accident that Jenna was hit. The two had bonded because they both had problems with their siblings. She attends a school for the blind in Philadelphia.
Maya St. Germain: The new neighbor in Rosewood, who is in love with Emily. She and Emily start seeing each other, but Emily continues to have conflicting feelings about being a lesbian.
Toby Cavanaugh: Jenna's deceased brother who knows Alison blinded his sister. He is considered "the black cat" of the neighborhood because he is always staring at people. He was often taunted by Alison and the girls for being odd. Nevertheless, he can't tell the police that it was actually Alison and her friends who had blinded his sister because he was hiding a secret himself - he was molesting his step-sister Jenna. At the end of the second book, he commits suicide because he could no longer live with the secret of what he did to Jenna.
Ezra Fitz: An English teacher at the girls' school, Rosewood Day, who was having an affair with Aria. He meets Aria in a sleazy bar titled 'Snookers', striking up a conversation about Iceland. Aria fails to inform Ezra that she is a high school student, and instead implies that she is in graduate school. All hell breaks loose for Aria when he finds A's text messages. He believes that Aria was using their affair for reputation, which is not true.
Mona Vanderwaal: Ali's sixth-grade clique considered her a loser when Alison was still alive. However, along with Hanna, Mona transformed herself into one of the most popular girls at school. She is Hanna's 'best friend' until she believes that Hanna is choosing her old friends over herself. She befriends their old enemies, Naomi Zeigler and Riley Wolfe. Together the three girls humiliate Hanna with nasty rumors, and ending with a scene at Mona's party that leaves Hanna a geek. It is later revealed that one of the identities of A is Mona, who got all her information about the girls' pasts from Ali's diary. However, when Mona attempts to murder Spencer since Spencer knows that Mona is A, Mona falls off a cliff and dies.
Sean Ackard: A typical Rosewood boy. He started out as Hanna's boyfriend but dumped her once she pushed him for sex in the woods at a party. Although he belongs to the 'Virginity Club' he confesses to Aria that he doesn't really believe in his pledge. They start a relationship, much to Hanna's disgust, but are broken up by Aria's relationship with Ezra.
Melissa Hastings: Spencer's older sister. She and Spencer have a running competition to determine who is the better Hastings, but Melissa always seems to win. Melissa has a town house renovated to celebrate her graduation from college. Spencer attempts to get even with two of her boyfriends, Ian Thomas and Wren Kim. She only kisses Ian, but almost has sex with Wren. She and Wren are found 'fooling around' in Spencer's barn apartment by Melissa through an open window. When Wren is dismissed from the family, Spencer continues to have a relationship with him, where they actually do have sex. Melissa finds out about Wren's second relationship with Spencer, but does not get mad because she is dating Wren, too. When Wren breaks up with Spencer because of 'another person', Spencer is shocked to find out that Melissa is the other person. Melissa decides to get her revenge on Wren and dumps him, leaving him without a girlfriend. Later, when Spencer is nominated for an essay prize, Melissa is put in second in the girls' contest. But 'A' sends Melissa a paragraph of the essay, which Melissa recognizes as her own work. The family is upset to find that Spencer used Melissa's essay as her own. Spencer pushes Melissa down the stairs, placing her in the hospital, when she has memories of Alison saying the same hurtful things to her.
Wren Kim: Melissa's college boyfriend who moves into the Hastings' home with Melissa. Spencer and Wren form a flirty relationship. They almost have sex, but Melissa witnesses the whole mishap through a window and ends her relationship with Wren. Spencer secretly keeps in touch with Wren afterward and continues to see him, even giving her virginity to him. He then dumps Spencer in the second book. It is not revealed till later that he dumped Spencer for her sister, Melissa.
Ian Thomas: Melissa's ex-high school sweetheart, whom Spencer had secretly kissed in 7th grade. He rekindles his relationship with Melissa after returning to coach field hockey at Rosewood. It is later revealed that Ian cheated on Melissa not only with Spencer but with Alison. Ian is later convicted of murdering Alison.
Kate: Hanna's soon-to-be-stepsister. Kate is very polite and sweet to everyone but quickly stabs Hanna in the back after meeting up with her after Hanna's makeover. Intellectual and accomplished, Kate is adored by her mother and Hanna's father, which makes Hanna sick with jealousy.
Meredith: A former student of Aria's father who is currently having an affair with him. She teaches yoga in Rosewood and eventually moves in with Aria's dad. Then, she becomes pregnant with Mr. Montgomery's child.
Andrew Campbell: A boy who loves studying, and rides in his car in front of Spencer's house. In book 2, Spencer asked him to go to Foxy (a town-wide dance) with her. He then overheard Spencer telling Wren on the phone that she would rather have him than Andrew, which makes Andrew feel used.
Jason DiLaurentis: Alison's brother, who did something serious enough for her to bond with Jenna over sibling disputes.
