Prestegjeld is a geographic and administrative area of the Church of Norway (den norske kirke) roughly equivalent to a parish. A prestegjeld can consist of one or many congregations. In a prestegjeld there are usually several clerical positions (chaplains) serving under the administration of a head minister (sogneprest or sokneprest).
Norway is geographically divided into 1,298 prestegjeld or parishes. These parishes are organized into 100 urban and rural deaneries (prosti). The 100 deaneries report into 11 dioceses.
