The President of Cyprus is the head of state and the head of government of the Republic of Cyprus. The office was created in 1960, after Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Currently, the President of Cyprus is Dimitris Christofias.
After the 1974 coup d'état which installed Nikos Sampson, Turkey invaded Northern Cyprus on 20 July 1974, and in 1983 created the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey itself. Consequently, the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus does de facto not extent to the northern third of the island.
