Captain Prescott Tremaine, better known as Scotty, is a fictional character in the Honorverse series of a military science fiction books by David Weber.

He is an expert pilot of both starships and small craft and a skilled energy-weapon marksman; and by these exploits he rose through the ranks to become one of the best officers in Royal Manticoran Navy's new carrier service. His longtime best friend and mentor is Chief Warrant Officer Sir Horace Harkness, without whom he is rarely seen.

[edit] Career

We first meet Scotty, as he is universally known to most of his acquaintances, in the very first book of the Honorverse, "On Basilisk Station", as the very junior ensign fresh from Saganami island academy. Already at this point he was noted for his signature exceptional small craft piloting skill and love for heavy firepower energy weapons, which is why he was assigned to the one of customs teams created by Honor Harrington upon her arrival in Medusa system.

Petty Officer 1st Class Horace Harkness was assigned to the same team, because being an expert smuggler himself, he was believed to outsmart his "colleagues" on the other side. Their famous frienship started at this point, when the grizzled veteran took Scotty "under his wing" and remained so ever since. After that he steadily raised through the ranks, serving in various positions as a tactical officer, an electronics officer and a flight deck control officer. Most of these assignments were also under command of Honor Harrington, whose close associate and student he became.

The benefits of this becomes mutual after Scotty saved her career in The Honor of the Queen, when Honor, angered by the repeated abuse of Manticoran POWs, especially female ones, was tempted to execute the commander of Masadan Blackbird Base on the spot, the action strictly forbidden (while understandable) by Manticoran Articles of War.

His strongest point, however, remained the small craft handling and management skill, which is why he was selected to RMN's new LAC carrier program as the one with the "fighter jock" mentality sought by Captains Alice Truman and Jaquelyn Harmon, tasked with the creation of CLAC doctrine.

After a brief stint as an electronic warfare officer in the Grayson Space Navy, which landed him to Havenite prison planet Hades, together with much of Harrington's usual team, Lt.Cmdr Tremaine returned to service as LAC specialist, eventually rising up to the rank of Captain and the position of the senior COLAC in Harrington's Eight Fleet as well as CO of the HMLAC Dacoit by the time of "At All Costs". He is presumed to survive the Battle of Manticore.
