[edit] Notability

I disagree fully that this is a non-notable road. The road has the presidential building on it, as well as Rastrapathi Bhavan--one of the most extensive tertiary care hospitals in India. I think it would be a loss to Wikipedia if such a valuable part of New Delhi's history was lost because it is less well-known outside of India. That is part of the point of Wikipedia--to spread awareness of important historical landmarks to those who might not know of them otherwise. It would be xenophobic to delete this article.

Hmmm. Not sure exactly where we stand on roads, but the presedential building certainly makes it sound notable- what do you have in the way of sources? Have there been any published articles on the subject of the road? J Milburn 20:05, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes I do. My apologies--I am relatively new to Wikipedia. I thought I referenced the article appropriately. I will check the Wikipedia faq. If you do a google search you will see that the President of India lives there. He is not as significant in policy making as the prime minister, but is still a noted position of power in the political system. Please let me know if there are any other problems with the article. I will bring back the references and attempt to place them appropriately. Again, my apologies. 20:34, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I have edited the article to show the source you cited. However, that page merely mentions the road, and isn't about it, so it certainly doesn't prove notability. I am reasonably sure that this road is notable, but I would certainly still like to see some more sources. Is this road ALWAYS the home of the president, or does this current one just happen to live there? Thanks. J Milburn 20:46, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello Milburn, it is always the home of the president. Similar to the White House always being the home of the current President. In the Indian hierarchy, however, the Prime Minister is more important than the President (except in 'state of emergency' circumnstances). I will find a reference that indicates this in the meantime. Thank you for helping make my article more academically rigorous. Chantoke 19:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Frankly, I do not understand why the article was placed back into the speedy deletion process. I feel I have referenced it appropriately, although there are obvious limitations to the site if you do not allow for references in Hindi--especially for a site that is as popular as Wikipedia in terms of its international audience.

Gate 35 is the main entrance to Rashtrapati Bhavan and is located on Prakash Vir Shastri Avenue. All because a reference is not typed out in English on the world wide web does not mean that it is less valid than one that is. The final decision is up to the very capable editors here at Wiki and I will defer to their judgment. However, I believe deleting this article would be xenophobic. If you would like me to add the references (not online) for the Hindi texts that discuss this avenue, I would be more than glad to do so, but because the text would be in Devanagari, I do not think it would help the vast vast majority of readers on this site. Please advise as to what you've done in past situations like this.Chantoke 19:39, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

One more good source would help. I will also note that if kept, the article is at the wrong place since the correct name apparently is Prakash Vir Shastri Avenue and it needs to be moved there. Since I did the nomination and it appears that the road may well be notable I'll pull the tags for now while the cleanup continues. I'll likely move the article also. Vegas Wikian - Thanks. Will add the reference. I am still getting used to writing in Devanagari, so I may have to translate the Hindi into phonetic English. Chantoke 08:32, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Criticism of references

The references do discuss street's notability by name. However, only one of them does this in English. An editors inability to read a foreign language is not part of the 'deletion criteria' on Wikipedia, as I understand it. Please be cautious in future deletion suggestions. That would be satisfactory if the references were about the street. Multiple references mentioning the street are clearly not sufficient. — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 14:51, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

They mention the street itself as a notable point, but it's in Hindi. Chantoke 03:37, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
