Praefectus annonae

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Praefectus annonae was a Roman imperial official charged with the supervision of the grain supply to the city of Rome. Under the republic, the job was done by an aedile; around 7 BC, Augustus created the position which was held by a member of the Equestrian order. He was aided by an adjutor (from the second century the subpraefectus).
