Poyle railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poyle railway station was a railway station on the outskirts of London, on the now closed line between Staines West and West Drayton. It was commonly referred to as Poyle Halt.
It opened in 1927 to serve the village of Poyle. It closed when passengers services on the line were ceased in 1965. Part of the line north of Colnbrook remains open today for goods services. [1] Large parts of the branch south of the station are now underneath the M25. Part of the former route is involved in the Heathrow Airtrack proposal to connect Staines with Heathrow Airport.[2] It should not be confused with Poyle Estate Halt, a small station nearby that opened in 1954 to serve the industrial estate near Poyle. It closed along with the rest of the line in 1965.[3]
Ultimately the Staines-West Drayton route never attracted enough passengers. The anticipated growth of minor villages like Colnbrook, Poyle and Yeoveney did not occur, and they remain today small and scattered settlements.
