There is a less electronic way to attenuate a guitar amp in order to get power distortion at a controlled volume: isolate the guitar speaker in a soundproof box or room, together with a microphone. This is the standard approach used in professional recording studios, though session guitarists often have a power attenuator or dummy load box in their rig.
