Powernext

Powernext is a Paris-based company operating a European energy exchange, providing an electronic market, similar to a stockmarket, for the trading of energy futures contracts and derivatives in Europe. Created in July 2001 with the opening of the European electricity market, Powernext has built a network of over 70 European members, including energy producers such as EDF, RWE, Electrabel, Endesa, end users, banks, brokers, traders, and retailers.
Powernext provides several price references:
- short term electricity to hedge balancing needs and volume risks: Powernext Day-Ahead;
- medium term electricity to hedge price risks: Powernext Futures.
Moreover, Powernext manages the Powernext-Balancing GRTgaz platform which allows the transmission system operator GRTgaz to progressively cover its daily balancing needs through the market mechanism.
Powernext also launched in July 2005 a spot carbon market which quickly took up a leading position among the European spot CO2 organized markets. The Powernext's Extraordinary General Assembly on December 21, 2007, ratified the purchase of Powernext's environmental activity, Powernext Carbon and Powernext Weather, by NYSE Euronext. These environmental activities are now housed within BlueNext, an entity created with Caisse des Depots.
