Powderhall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Powderhall is an area in the north of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. It is mainly centred around Broughton Road. Until recently it was best known for its greyhound racing track, which has now closed. The site has been redeveloped for housing and business purposes. This was one of a number of greyhound racing tracks in the city, and played host to motorcycle speedway racing from 1977 to 1995, as home to the Edinburgh Monarchs, who have since relocated to Armadale. Greyhounds raced at various times at Stenhouse Stadium, Marine Gardens and on land at Gilmerton. The New Year Sprint, an open 110 metre event, was staged at Powderhall from 1870 onwards. Since 1999 it has been held in Musselburgh.

Powderhall also has one of the city's main waste transfer stations.
