The Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, sometimes referred to as the French 1,000 Guineas, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) at Longchamp Racecourse and takes place annually in May.
The race is the French equivalent of the English 1,000 Guineas and together with a similar race for colts, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, it was first run in 1883. Prior to this there had been a single race for both colts and fillies, the Poule d'Essai, which was first run in 1840 at the Champ de Mars, moving to Longchamp in 1857. In forty runnings, the Poule d'Essai was won by a filly on ten occasions.
Not run from 1915 to 1918 due to World War I, the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches was also disrupted during World War II. With no racing in France in the spring of 1940, a substitute race took place in October combining both the Poulains and Pouliches. This race, the Prix d'Essai, was held at Auteuil and won by the colt Djebel. In 1943 the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches was transferred to Tremblay and for the following two years it was run at Maisons-Laffitte, returning to Longchamp in 1946.
The first foreign trained winner of the race was Culture Vulture in 1992, trained in England by Paul Cole.
