The orb-weaver spiders build spiral wheel-shaped webs. The spiderweb has long been thought of as an engineering marvel. In building it, the spider starts with a line attached to one surface and floated on the wind to another surface. The spider secures the line and then drops another line from the center, making a "Y". The scaffolding is completed with many radial lines of non-sticky silk, which support a final spiral of sticky capture silk. Photo credit: Fir0002 |
