A male Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) in flight. This species of pigeon, native to western and southern Europe and North Africa, is known throughout the world, although pure Rock Pigeons are increasingly rare, having been displaced by the domesticated version. Some pigeon breeds such as homing pigeons have been extremely useful to humans. Photo credit: Alan D.
