[edit] Historical Perspective

[edit] School History

Opened in 1905, it is a boarding school based on the English boarding schools system.[2] Founded by C.D. Hope, the original structure had been built long before and had to close during the Anglo-Boer war. The building itself was designed in Cape Dutch architecture design as it was prominent style during those times and is now declared a local heritage site. There are 4 boarding houses: Granton(1909) and Milton(1910) and 2 of which were built at a much later stage - Buxton(?) and Barnard(?). These buildings didn't follow the cape-Dutch styles and built more suited to the time they were build in. The school's motto, Iustorum Semita Lux Splendens(Latin), was developed by the founder C.D. Hope and means "The path of the just is a shining light."

[edit] Sports

The school has a reputation for being sport's orientated as every student is required to perform a sport during the duration of their schooling years. A wide variety of sports is offered of which the popular ones include: rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis and swimming. Apart from this, the student is then required to do athletics up to inter-house levels.

[edit] Cultural

The school's cultural activities are run with the school's teaching staff in collaboration with the students, activities such as plays and public speaking occur regularly. The school being quite competitive regionally in this division as good English pronunciation is highly coveted - many students are of previously disadvantaged areas as well as predominantly Afrikaans speaking - despite the fact the school is not extremely supportive of this field.

[edit] Alumni

[edit] Old Boys Society

The schools alumni is formed of old school members that join the school's Old Boys Society.[3] Among other tasks, the society is responsible for the over-seeing of the school and helps with the SGB(Student Governing Body). The society is also responsible for meetings and student reunions.
