Permission unverified. Not clear if the uploader had forwarded permission to OTRS. Vinh1313 (talk) 00:14, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Hey VinH1313...
I am trying to figure out how to respond to you. I apologize for the delay. I'm new to adding things here. So with these comments I hope they make it to you. I appreciate your comments. Uploading a photo is far more tougher than one would think. I do have permission to use the photo, and already sent the e-mail of agreement to Permissions [permissions-at-wikimedia-org]. I am not sure how to place a link with the pic, to the e-mail I received. Thanks for any help you might give.

First, thank you for being sweet in your correspondence with me. I created the page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashlynn_Brooke ). It is basic, but also the first one I did. I was hoping to post a picture on the article, but need your permission to do so. The one I thought would look nice is, http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p288/aallen77/picsfromcha d436.jpg
...Below is a standard permission letter.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Michael T M. Fan and first time Wikipedia editor.
Ms. Ashlynn Brooke,
I found your MySpace page while doing research for the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, and thought your a couple of your images might be appropriate for inclusion in our articles concerning your bio.
I am specifically seeking your permission to use this image: http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p288/aallen77/picsfromcha d436.jpg
I would like to include your image in these articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashlynn_Brooke
Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org/) is a free encyclopedia that is collaboratively edited by volunteers from around the world. Our goal is to create a comprehensive knowledge base that may be freely distributed and available at no charge.
Normally we ask permission for material to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of your own work, you are granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share your materials freely -- and even potentially use them commercially -- so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, nor prevent others from using or copying them freely.
You can read this license in full at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GFDL
This license expressly protects creators from being considered responsible for modifications made by others, while ensuring that creators are credited for their work. There is more information on our copyright policy at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights
We choose the GFDL because we consider it the best available tool for ensuring our encyclopedia can remain free for all to use, while providing credit to everyone who donates text and images. This may or may not be compatible with your goals in creating the materials available on your website. Please be assured that if permission is not granted, your materials will not be used at Wikipedia -- we have a very strict policy against copyright violations.
We also accept licensing of images under other free-content licenses like some Creative Commons licenses - see http://creativecommons.org for this.
With your permission, we will credit you for your work in the image's permanent description page, noting that it is your work and is used with your permission, and we will provide a link back to your website. Please explicitly state under which license you grant permission.
We invite your collaboration in writing and editing articles on this subject and any others that might interest you. - Okay if you have already sent the email to OTRS then that's fine.Vinh1313 (talk) 01:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Another reminder is that just because she's the subject of the photograph doesn't mean she owns the copyright. Vinh1313 (talk) 01:23, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- But was she granted by the photographer the rights to use the photograph for whatever she pleases? Usually before anybody gets photographed for promotional reasons, the subject signs a release form, which waives thier right to use the photograph. --wL<speak·check> 21:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

This is a picture of a toy version of a copyrighted character, which means it may be a nonfree derivative work. — wL<speak·check> 21:13, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- What can I do about this? --Dan LeveilleTALK 11:25, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Since the picture is primarily about a copyrighted character, you could give it a Fair use rationale. --wL<speak·check> 14:46, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- Taking an image of an object makes it you own work, and not derivative. As such, I am removing the tag placed on the image page, and subsequent captions. For example, look at articles like Game Boy, where a picture is used under a free license. Asenine (talk)(contribs) 16:15, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- If you read the commons policy page about derivative works, you'd find that a Game Boy is a utilitarian object, which is not copyrightable. Commons:COM:DW#If I take a photograph of a kid who is holding a stuffed Winnie the Pooh toy, does Disney own the copyright in the photo since they own the Pooh design?, brings the point that using an image of a stuffed doll to illistrate the copyrighted character the doll represents is a derivative. It's not as easy as it looks. If it were, I wouldn't have put it up here.--wL<speak·check> 23:42, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Re-creating a copyrighted logo using MS Paint cannot attract any new copyright as exact replicas do not have the required originality. Chris.B (talk) 22:23, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- I only created this image for use in User:Michaelbeckham/Dem. I used Image:Republicanlogo Pn.png as a template for licensing, which by the way that image hasn't been disputed. HoosierState 22:29, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- Image:Republicanlogo Pn.png was not in a category and was redundant to Image:Republicanlogo.svg, a non-free logo, so it must have been an oversight on Commons. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Chris.B (talk) 22:39, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
