[edit] Image:Arafat-young.jpg

Source given doesn't link to where the image is found within the source. Highly doubtful this work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder as source doesn't prove such and no other source for proof has been given. Permission says free to use with acknowledgment by the source's webmaster. Is this on file? -- ALLSTAR ECHO 03:25, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Note:Summary and license have since been changed leading to further suspect of the image. See discussion below. -- ALLSTAR ECHO 13:59, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
  • The picture was taken in Egypt in the 1940s and according to Egyptian Copyright laws, any media thats not of artistic nature and was published before 1987 or 25 years before the present is free for use. You can view the license on the image description. The photographer is unknown, but in this case it shouldn't be of concern because it looks as if the picture is a school photo. A reason being is because Arafat came from a poor-middle-class family and photos for most non-adults were not taken except when they were needed for a school record of some sort. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Al Ameer son (talkcontribs) 09:39, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
You've since changed the summary and license to reflect Egyptian copyright law. Do you have source/proof for the new license in that the pic was taken in Egypt and is covered by Egyptian copyright law? Where did you get the picture. -- ALLSTAR ECHO 13:59, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I got this particular picture from PASSIA. However, Yasser Arafat lived in Egypt until 1956, years after the picture was taken. He lived in Jerusalem but left in 1937 and he left Egypt briefly in 1948 to fight in a war but it cannot be possible that the picture was taken in either scenarios because the picture looks like a personal portrait and was taken in the 1940s. --Al Ameer son 16:09, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

P.S. I changed the license info to a more appropriate license. Thats all. If you suspect that I did it just because it was listed for deletion you are somewhat right. I would have never thought of it without this nomination for removal. --Al Ameer son 16:21, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I have been searching the web to find this picture in another website but it seems on all the pages I checked it gives a brief description about it being of 'uncertain origins' as stated by the image's captions in the ABC[1] and BBC[2] newsites. --Al Ameer son 17:35, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

The image is most likely free. Could this process speed up.--Al Ameer son 03:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Image kept. Believed that current tag is valid. -Nv8200p talk 22:38, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Nakba50.jpg

Summary says: Reproduced from http://www.passia.org with permission (Mahmoud Abu Rumieleh, Webmaster). Free to use with acknowledgement. Is this on file? Do we have proof that a)webmaster Mahmoud Abu Rumieleh owns it to release it and b) that he actually did release it? A letter on file? An email on file? -- ALLSTAR ECHO 03:46, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure, I'll contact Ian Pitchford for details. Might need day or two. Same goes for all other images from PASSIA. --Al Ameer son 04:27, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Remember, releases must be on file with the Wikimedia Communications Committee. -- ALLSTAR ECHO 03:09, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Arafat & Yassin 1997.jpg

Source given is Associated Press via Guardian.co.uk. When did AP images become public domain? -- ALLSTAR ECHO 03:50, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

If AP images are not released into public domain then delete it. However, on news sites there is simple acknowledgment of AP news. Could this apply for wikipedia. [--Al Ameer son 04:29, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
As I understand it: It could be enough for a fair use rationale, however a) those news sites may have a (not visible) deal/agreement to use AP images and b) Wikipedia is aiming for content that can not just be used, but be re-distributed, modified, sold, put in a printed encyclopedia, etc. Its one thing to put a picture on a website (and that may be harmless), but its another thing to use it commercially.
Also, I'd like to point out that this is probably considered a historical image now and can't be replaced with a free-er one--one that allows more things to be done with it. Jason McHuff 19:10, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Thats too bad, it really enhanced one of the article's main sections. Rules are rules you should delete it. --Al Ameer son 03:20, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Copyright trumps historical significance. Simply, if it's owned by someone else, it can't be used. -- ALLSTAR ECHO 03:55, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes please if it is free let this process end now or ASAP. I have already nominated article for FA status. By the way, thanks so much for fighting for this image's survival. I thought it was gone for sure. --Al Ameer son 15:29, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
That is entirely incorrect. Copyrighted images may be used under fair use for a variety of purposes, including to illustrate a unique historic event when no free equivalent is available. Take, for example, this picture. While the image description may need to be corrected, the image is acceptable to illustrate Yassir Arafat's relations with Hamas and other militant groups. <eleland/talkedits> 00:01, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
I have corrected the tags and added a valid Fair-Use rationale. I request that this discussion be speedily closed since it is irrelevant; if the fair-use rationale is disputed, that's a separate issue. <eleland/talkedits> 00:10, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

The image is not free, but the fair use rationale (for its use in Yassir Arafat) appears valid. Superm401 - Talk 11:45, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
I've added the image to the Ahmad Yassin article. I'll remove it immediately. --Al Ameer son 21:25, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Why hasn't this discussion been closed yet! --Al Ameer son 01:24, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

That's correct. Something wrong happened. I couldn't find it again now. Anyway, we have no other choice. Let it die. Thanks. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 05:16, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Burlington street.png

Image page says "Copyright held by the City of Burlington." Can someone please verify if they actually did release the image into the public domain? Thanks. Jason McHuff 19:00, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Also, it's not a great quality image. Note the dots (pixels) visible in it and the small dimensions. Jason McHuff 19:14, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
