Source given doesn't link to where the image is found within the source. Highly doubtful this work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder as source doesn't prove such and no other source for proof has been given. - The picture was taken in Egypt in the 1940s and according to Egyptian Copyright laws, any media thats not of artistic nature and was published before 1987 or 25 years before the present is free for use. You can view the license on the image description. The photographer is unknown, but in this case it shouldn't be of concern because it looks as if the picture is a school photo. A reason being is because Arafat came from a poor-middle-class family and photos for most non-adults were not taken except when they were needed for a school record of some sort. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Al Ameer son (talk • contribs) 09:39, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
- You've since changed the summary and license to reflect Egyptian copyright law. Do you have source/proof for the new license in that the pic was taken in Egypt and is covered by Egyptian copyright law? Where did you get the picture. -- ALLSTAR ECHO 13:59, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
I got this particular picture from PASSIA. However, Yasser Arafat lived in Egypt until 1956, years after the picture was taken. He lived in Jerusalem but left in 1937 and he left Egypt briefly in 1948 to fight in a war but it cannot be possible that the picture was taken in either scenarios because the picture looks like a personal portrait and was taken in the 1940s. --Al Ameer son 16:09, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I changed the license info to a more appropriate license. Thats all. If you suspect that I did it just because it was listed for deletion you are somewhat right. I would have never thought of it without this nomination for removal. --Al Ameer son 16:21, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
I have been searching the web to find this picture in another website but it seems on all the pages I checked it gives a brief description about it being of 'uncertain origins' as stated by the image's captions in the ABC[1] and BBC[2] newsites. --Al Ameer son 17:35, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

- If AP images are not released into public domain then delete it. However, on news sites there is simple acknowledgment of AP news. Could this apply for wikipedia. [--Al Ameer son 04:29, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
- As I understand it: It could be enough for a fair use rationale, however a) those news sites may have a (not visible) deal/agreement to use AP images and b) Wikipedia is aiming for content that can not just be used, but be re-distributed, modified, sold, put in a printed encyclopedia, etc. Its one thing to put a picture on a website (and that may be harmless), but its another thing to use it commercially.

- That is entirely incorrect. Copyrighted images may be used under fair use for a variety of purposes, including to illustrate a unique historic event when no free equivalent is available. Take, for example, this picture. While the image description may need to be corrected, the image is acceptable to illustrate Yassir Arafat's relations with Hamas and other militant groups. <eleland/talkedits> 00:01, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
