Hello, I do not belive there is or was a gallery called the Art Gallery of Toronto, I belive the Art gallery of Ontario, which is located in Toronto is correct but I have never heard of the other. It might be something that needs checking.

[edit] Color Field Painting

This article says that Color Field painting supplanted Post-Painterly Abstraction. I'm not entirely how to approach this. For one thing, Color field seems mostly to be a type of post-painterly abstraction. On the other hand, I doubt it was supplanting PPA, since CF came first (more or less - frankenthaler did Mountains and Sea and then Greenberg decided staining was the way to go). Opinons? Yes, first there was Color field painting by artists like Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Adolph Gottlieb who were called Color field artists by Clement Greenberg during the 1950s. The Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition of 1964, curated by Clement Greenberg advanced the next generation of younger artists. Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland etc. Actually James Brooks made stain paintings in the 1940s and Jackson Pollock's 1951 stain paintings as well as his 1952 stain paintings predate Mountains and Sea.
