Postmaster.co.uk is a premium subscription-based internet and IMAP based e-mail service owned by Spider Networks Ltd. Postmaster was launched in 1997 shortly after the Hotmail service was launched to the public. The service was free for 8 years until SN Ltd announced that it was becoming too expensive to run as a free service. Most customers migrated to the paid service however a large number left.
The service also offers a number of utilities including Blog, Webspace, Forum, Calendar, File Storage and Address Book. These are the features that have made them the email client of choice for small businesses in the UK. The current fee is £14.99 per year which includes 2GB of storage space which is significantly more than its main competitor Microsoft-Owned Hotmail which offers space upgrades from £5.00 per year.
During 2004 & 2005 Postmaster suffered a number of reliability problems; this meant that the service was very slow and sometimes inaccessible. Spider Networks Ltd moved their servers from a Docklands-based datacentre to their own datacentre to combat this.
Since 2005 Postmaster have dropped all advertising on the website, and so unlike most mainstream providers such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail there are no advertising banners or links.
