[edit] Africa

I have been maintaining the Africa portal since late May and hope to see it become a featured portal soon. For the list of Africa featured articles and pictures, please see Portal:Africa/Featured article and Portal:Africa/Featured picture, respectively. Summary tables are available on the talk pages. Any comments or suggestions for improvement would be most welcome. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 22:21, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Portal/Guidelines first. Add archives to FAs, FPs, news. Cleanup/update "Things you can do". Fix links in "Sister projects". Topics box? Geography box? History box? feydey 19:06, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your feedback. I am in the process of making various substantive and surface modifications to the portal and will provide a detailed response/accounting of changes in a few hours. Could you please specify what you mean by "Geography box" and "History box"? I checked the various geography-related featured portals and couldn't find an example. Are these "selected article" boxes or static-content boxes that provide information about the geography and history of the continent? Thanks again, Black Falcon (Talk) 18:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
  1. Sister projects: I have created a new page at Portal:Africa/Wikimedia that now only links to other Wikimedia projects that have pages for Africa.
  2. Things you can do: It's updated (see diff). I also removed the link to the Africa collaboration, since it has been inactive for a few months.
  3. Topics box: I created Template:Africa topics and have transcluded it onto the main portal page. I created it in the template namespace, as opposed to the portal namespace, so that it could also be used in relevant Africa-related articles.
  4. News archive: The "Recent events" page has an archive that is surrounded by <noinclude> tags to prevent transclusion. Any entries that appear on the portal recent events page are recorded at Portal:Current events/Africa (the reverse is not true), so the latter page serves as a more comprehensive archive of sorts.
  5. FA, FP, and DYK archives: Each box now includes a link to the relevant archive page. The "Read more..." link for FAs now come immediately after the last sentence (as here).
As promised. -- Black Falcon (Talk) 21:07, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Good work! I see You included the geography-related and history-related topics in the "Topics" box. "Countries of Africa" - is there a reason that the regions of Africa are listed from eastern to western (left to right), as they are the other way around in the map above Image:Africa-regions.png? feydey 05:45, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! As far as the ordering of the "countries" box, that was just to keep it alphabetical: E–M–N–S–W. Would you suggest I change it to a North-South orientation (Northern, Western, Middle, Eastern, Southern), especially since a right-to-left listing may be a little counterintuitive as English text is written and read left-to-right? -- Black Falcon (Talk) 17:56, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
North-South orientation could be tested - how it looks like... feydey 08:37, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Done: Portal:Africa/Countries of Africa. By the way, I'd like your opinion on the vertical list format? I considered a horizontal format, but thought it would look too cluttered; see this version (ignore the very bottom part). What do you think? -- Black Falcon (Talk) 16:07, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Looks ok now, good work! feydey 19:46, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
