[edit] Guwahati
Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of Guwahati. But I must commend you for the wonderful job on Guwahati. Very well done, indeed.

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Gmc.JPG)
Thanks for uploading Image:Gmc.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Guwahati proper names
I suggest that you use the standard spelling for the proper names and their phonetic spellings in brackets. For example you could use "Fancy Bazaar" and put "fasi bozaar" in brackets and then mention that the origin of the name is "gallows market", because of the gallows in its vicinity and that gallows in Assamese is "fasi".
Chaipau 13:23, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Assam
Thanks for a substantial increase in the Culture section of Assam. Could you provide a reference to this input, please. Also, the substantial section actually would be better written under its own page Culture of Assam, with a short summary left at the Assam article, and a link at the head of the section to Culture of Assam.
Chaipau 21:35, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- Please look at User_talk:Chaipau#Etymology for a note on the recent Assam edits. At some point we may have to move the Etymology section to a separate page, since it is currently hotly debated and we need a fuller description. Chaipau 12:57, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- I have started Assam silk. See if you have something to add. I have also started Etymology of Assam, and shall shortly shrink the section in Assam. I envisage this article should first enlist all the evidence. Then give some of the different theories that are going around, beginning with academic references. Let me know what you think. Chaipau 15:16, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
gud idea!...bt will be little slow fr next few days.Porikolpok Oxom 05:57, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- I think the diverse cultures should also find a place in the second paragraph. I shall try to insert that and then shrink it further. I shall shrink the third paragraph too. Also, would you want to do a page on the Biodiversity of Assam, a list of plants and animals of Assam? Chaipau 16:17, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Culture of Assam
I think it would be better to call the article "Culture of Assam" and not "Assamese culture". First because it is in the style of many other pages that Wikipedia has: History of Assam, Music of Assam, People of Assam etc. Second, there are now cultural traits (for example, urban culture) that is not part of traditional Assamese culture, but which are complex and composite forms. And third, the page will give space to Assamese and other traditional sister cultures enough space for their descriptions along with more recent trends.
I take the liberty to move the page to "Culture of Assam".
Chaipau 13:14, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- I made the changes in Culture of Assam. Also, I wish to develop the Culture of Assam with Culture of USA as a guide. Please have a look at that page. We should not put up the Culture of Assam in the way it has been done traditionally---which has divided traits into categories (Assamese, Bodo, etc), but rather as living practices by people in Assam.
- Chaipau 16:37, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry about the warning, now I saw that you just made a mistake, I fixed it. Cheers!~ Arjun 17:39, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] District of Assam image
The image [1] has a lot of white space around it. It will look better in the articles if it was cropped. Chaipau 12:36, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Categorising Stubs
I've noticed that you've created a number of articles with uncategorised stub tags recently - it would be helpful if where possible you could use a specific stub tag, such as {{india-culture-stub}} - a complete list of stub types can be found here. Jeodesic 15:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Districts of Assam
I think there is a slight error in the Bongaingaon-Kokrajhar boundary in the [2] that you have created. I would suggest you use the Census of India map that you can generate from here (take your cursor to the left, over "The next level"). I think you could base you map on this generated map, which also has sub-division boundaries, in addition to the district boundaries. I have made some progress on this, but I shall wait for you to update the map in your style.
Also, the map is 2001 based. The further division of Kamrup into Kamrup (Rural) and Kamrup (Urban) occured after 2001. Also, some districts in the best were redrawn and renamed after the formation of BTC. So it might be best to just stick to the 2001 boundaries for now and mention the Kamrup (Urban) and the renamed BTC districts in the text.

[edit] Assam
Welcome back to active editing! Assam is growing fast.
Could you please add the reference base of the article too. Try to add a reference or two to every assertion. I have realized it is much easier to do it while writing than waiting to complete the article before doing it.

- I did get a chance to look at the volume. Unfortunately, the chapter was written on material based on very old research. The groups (Alpines/Irano-Scythians etc) mentioned are based on head measurements, a method that is no longer used. Most modern accounts don't seem to mention these groups. Oh, well that's fine, then. To be honest, my knowledge on the subject is actually zero; I had restored the image because no explanation had been given for its removal. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Jeff Silvers 13:48, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] References
For citing a reference multiple times, use the following method: Wikipedia:Footnotes#Citing_a_footnote_more_than_once. Chaipau 13:25, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Porikolpok, I notice that you are updating a few references on Assam at this time. I would like to point out that the references are not being used properly. They are just being shown at the bottom without any connection to the statements that are being supported by the references you are citing. If you need any help let me know. -Deepraj | Talk 08:29, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding on my talk page. We need to have go about this in a structured manner. I know you are doing this with the best interest in mind but the references can be improved upon (actually some got worse, unfortunately). It is great that you are taking my comments in a positive manner. This is what wikipedia is about! I am not correcting right now because you are still busy with moving/formatting the reference(s). Please check the citation templates. Basically, there are a few key points. Reference should be placed next to the statement it is supporting. If it is done with the right wiki markup then it automatically shows up at the reflist (usually in the bottom). There are multiple ways of referencing books/websites/news items. Check the orchid reference for example.-Deepraj | Talk 09:58, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- My sincere apologies. The pointers I gave may have been a little ambiguous. I meant the orchid (ref id=15 the last I checked)reference within the Assam article. In any case carry on the good work of adding the references at least. Maybe we can later go through this together and clear up any misunderstanding? I am putting up a test page that should be useable a little later today so that we avoid cluttering Assam with our possible apples and oranges comparison. OK? ;-) -Deepraj | Talk 11:43, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- Just a note. It would be good to dump all the text and references on Assam first. Then we will have to do an overhaul cleanup of the article. Currently, there are a few very bloated sections. The History section, for instance, which I had written a long time ago. Since then I had written the History of Assam, which also is bloated in the "Colonial period", which might need a new article page. The Economy of Assam can take material from Economy section in Assam. So let us just dump stuff and then cleanup later. Chaipau 13:14, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Commercial use of Image:Brahmaputra Blues.jpg
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Brahmaputra Blues.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Brahmaputra Blues.jpg is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only" or "used with permission for use on Wikipedia only" which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3).
If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.
If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.
If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:Brahmaputra Blues.jpg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Hi! I noticed that you have updated a few references in Assam where "Asom Sahitya Sabha" is now "Asam Sahitya Sabha" [3]. Is that official? [edit] Image:East-Hem_700ad.jpg
Hi Porikolpok Oxom. I got those borders from a map of Asia in 800 AD that showed Tibet's borders, as well as from the History of Tibet article, which described Tibet ruling those lands in 700 AD. If you could show me some better sources, and could send me a map with the correct borders, I'd be happy to correct them. Respectfully, Thomas Lessman (talk) 23:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Porikolpok Oxom. I appreciate that you created and uploaded a map of Kamarupa to Wikipedia Commons. However, I couldn't find it. Could you please send me the link (or post it on the talk page of the Image:East-Hem_700ad.jpg). Thomas Lessman (talk) 16:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

- Hi, could you please provide the links for the Kamarupa map links? Thanks. Also, look at Kamarupa kingdom. I am working on it. Chaipau (talk) 19:38, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Hello Chai, I just quickly made two maps with corrected boundaries on those original Tibetan Empire Maps so that Talessman can revise his easily. But to use it in the article Kamarupa, probably i will have to reivise these with better versions. However, i have posted these two maps in Talessman's talk page. Plz check there.Porikolpok Oxom (talk) 22:45, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Kamarupa and East-Hem in 700 - 800 AD
I appreciate your help with the East-Hem 700 and 800 AD maps. It really helps that you sent me maps showing the corrected borders! (I can't stress how helpful that is!)
About Manipur: I had to make a guestimate of Manipur's location because I didn't see it in any historical maps. But your map makes sense. I believe I'll need to correct that on at least 20 maps...
Please feel free to look over my other maps and let me know if they need corrected. Southeast Asia is especially lacking in information. I'll be happy to add your corrections in the list of sources, as I did on the East-Hem_800ad.jpg page Source information.
I will upload the corrected versions of these maps as soon as they are ready. Thomas Lessman (talk) 15:05, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Tibet and India, late 8th century AD
I found some sources describing (briefly) Tibet's expansion into Bengal and India in the late 8th century AD.
- 1. Google Book's "History of Tibet" makes several mentions of Nepal as a Tibetan vassal, and also mentions that India's Pala Empire under Dharmapala accepted Tibetan suzereignty. (Page 54)
- 2. The wiki-article, History of Tibet also mentions Tibetan military influence covering Bengal.
- 3. The afore-mentioned [Huhai.net map of Asia in 750 AD] also shows Tibet ruling Kamarupa, Bengal, and Pala.
You are right that there is a scarcity of sources covering possible Tibetan activities in Medieval India. There are also few sources for Bengal and Assam in that time period. Since Tibet did briefly subjucate Nan Zhao, it's possible that they also briefly subjucated part of northern India, though exactly when and for how long I don't currently know. It may not have been an actual conquest, it could have been some plundering raids or marriage alliances. I need to find out more information before I can correct the maps. Thomas Lessman (talk) 06:20, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- I suggest that this discussion be moved to Talk:Kamarupa (History). According to local sources (Sanskrit epigraphs or folk/legend/myth), there is no mention of a Tibetan political invasion or influence. In the period after 750 AD, Kamarupa was ruled by a non-Aryan group (possibly Tibeto-Burman speaking), but the epigraphs left by this dynasty are in Sanskrit, and the kings drew thir lineage to a legendary king called Naraka. So even though the dynasty was Tibeto-Burman, it had possibly migrated to the Kamarupa region earlier and was sufficiently influenced by the Sanskrit culture. Chaipau (talk) 13:10, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
