The town controversially stopped united energy’s plan to build Britain’s largest offshore wind farm which would have provided energy into the national grid. Locals protested at the idea that wind turbines should be placed in plain sight of the town.

[edit] Location relative to Cardiff

If there's a consensus among reputable editors that a place's location relative to Cardiff is relevant and important, then fine. However, I've got two issues: a. creating a precedent for treating every village and town in Wales the same way - I don't believe there's going to be a consensus for that; b. adding Cardiff randomly to other articles is simply advertising. If people love their hometown, that's great, but it shouldn't bias Wikipedia. The IP who made the initial edit adding mention of Cardiff wasn't improving this article, he/she was simply promoting (as they said) "the major city Cardiff". It is not in any way relevant . This look likes classical POV pushing. Resist strongly Velela (talk) 19:46, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
I certainly agree that what had been written here was a major case of POV and PEACOCK (and there's a hell of a lot of that, especially promoting Cariff - this is an encyclopaedia guys, not a tourist board!), but mentioning the town's position relative to other more well-known towns and cities could be helpful to any layman reading this who isn't so familiar with this or any other smaller town. As a random example, the article for Andover, Hampshire mentions the town's location relative to Basingstoke, Winchester and Southampton in order to give it some context. In this case, Porthcawl's location relative to Cardiff AND Swansea might be helpful, as long as no additional descriptions (especially peacock terms) of the towns are used.
