The narrative is not clear. What was the meaning of "cutting down" Wilson's body and why did the onlookers object? Sir Walter Scott's version implies that the witnesses sympathized with the victim and considered Porteous to have been unnecessarily cruel. CharlesTheBold 17:12, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
