[edit] HMMWV

I don't think the HMMWV should be on the list of trucks that use a portal gear. I'm pretty sure the Hummers use a jointed axle, with a joint in the center of the wheel and a joint up in the body of the truck. There aren't any gears, the hummer just has ground clearance because it doesn't have a straight axle that connects a set of tires. Each wheel has it's own axle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.254.124.99 (talk) 05:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I wondered about this inclusion as well, given the low attachment point on the hub. However, while these may not be quite worthy as proper references, check out:

I am the "bloggish owner" (heh) that you cite. Indeed, the HMMWV uses a portal axle. We call it a "geared hub" - q.v. feature list at AM General corporate site

[edit] Proposed move

This topic is referred to in the article as "portal axle", which is generally the preferred term, as far as I can see. Shouldn't this page be moved to portal axle? ENeville 23:15, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. Don't think its a big issue either way though. Tmaull 16:16, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
