For the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, Portugal entered Como tudo começou, performed by Rui Bandeira. The song received 12 points (all from France), finishing 21st.
The National Final was held on March 8 at the Pavilhão Atlântico in Lisbon, and was hosted by Manuel Luís Goucha and Alexandra Lencastre. There were 8 songs in the final, with the winning song chosen by 11 regional juries.
