Portsmouth Council election, 2008

Elections to Portsmouth Council were held on Thursday 1 May 2008. One third of the council was up for election. 14 seats will be up for election (1 from each of the 14 wards) and members were elected using the first-past-the-post voting system.
After the 2007 election the Lib Dems had 19 seats, Conservatives 17, Labour 5 and 1 Independent.
Between the 2007 and 2008 elections, the LibDems gained a previously safe Conservative seat in a byelection and two Labour councillors became independents, as did one Conservative. So before the 2008 election the composition of the council was Lib Dems 20, Conservatives 15, Lab 3, Independent 4.
