Roll (2006) 303

Portlethen Primary School is one of two primary schools in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire. Despite having the larger building of the two primaries, it had a smaller school role in 2006, than that of Fishermoss Primary School.[2]

[edit] History

The school dates back to the nineteenth century when Portlethen was a small fishing village.

The first school building was what is now the Police Station. The school then moved to the buildings which were used as the Community Centre, which was built in 1860. The buildings were demolished in March/April 2007, after the centre moved to the new Portlethen Academy.

The earliest entry in any log book in the school is that of 16 January 1874 when both the primary and secondary scholars were enrolled. An additional classroom was added in 1876.

In 1962, a new primary block (the current building) was built and opened on the 6th March. There were 103 pupils occupying rooms 1 to 3 and a room behind the hall, now the Nursery.

In 1975 an extension was built to accommodate a rising roll (then 212) and a further extension was added in 1978. By this time Secondary pupils were bussed to Mackie Academy until Portlethen Academy opened in 1987.

Since then the building has remained as it was apart from minor improvements in the infant entrance, upstairs infant areas, new toilets, new huts, window sections replaced, a new library and ICT suite.

[edit] Future

There has been much argument about the future of Portlethen Primary School, and its current condition. The building, in general is in a state of bad repair, and is urgently needing either renovated or replaced. It is also too small for the suspected outburst of children. There have been many meetings on the future of the school, and currently two options are being considered: (Source: Aberdeenshire Council Website) A- Move Current Primary School Across A90 Dual Carriage Way, to a new site near the new houses being developed in Hillside, Portlethen. B- Build new school adjacent to current school in playground, and build another school across the A90 for pupils of Hillside and adjacent area.

It was widely thought amongst residents that the new primary school would be built as part of the PPI scheme, as the new academy was, but the new Scottish Government abolished this scheme in 2007.

[edit] Administration Team

The Administration team are in charge of the day to day running of the school. As of August 2007, they are:

Head Teacher: Allison Cook

Depute Head Teacher: Margaret Ferguson

Assistant Head Teacher: Morag Weston
