Jenna Jameson

Jenna Jameson is considered one of the most famous and popular American pornographic actresses in the world.

Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, Jameson began dancing in strip clubs at the age of 17. This quickly led to nude pictorials in dozens of pornographic magazines.

After a bidding war, Wicked Pictures, a pornographic film production company, signed Jameson to an exclusive contract. After only a few films, she quickly achieved fame and critical success, and, in 1997, won top awards from three major industry organizations.

Jameson has also made cameo appearances in some mainstream movies and other media, including Howard Stern's 1997 film Private Parts and, in 2002, as the voice of a porn star called "Candy Suxxx," in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

In 1997, she made an appearance for an Extreme Championship Wrestling PPV as the valet for the Dudley Boyz, followed by a few months where she was the ECW interviewer. She also filmed a vignette with Val Venis in the WWE.

In 2001, she debated on the merits of porn against a panel of anti-porn activists at the Oxford Union and won the debate 204 to 27. (read more . . . )

John Curtis Holmes (August 8, 1944March 13, 1988) better known as John C. Holmes or Johnny Wadd (after the lead character in a series of related films), was one of the most famous male adult film stars of all time, appearing in about 2,500 adult loops, stag films, and porno feature movies in the 1970s and 1980s, including at least one gay feature film and a handful of gay loops. He was best known for his exceptionally large penis, which was heavily promoted as being the longest in the porn industry; its exact dimensions are, however, unknown. Holmes also attracted notoriety for his involvement in the brutal Wonderland Murders in 1981, and for his death from AIDS.

Holmes was the subject of a long article in Rolling Stone magazine in 1989 and a feature length documentary, and the inspiration for two Hollywood movies (Boogie Nights and Wonderland).

Additionally he has been the subject of numerous biographical films and documentaries, such as Exhausted: John C. Holmes, the Real Story, Wadd: The Life and Times of John C. Holmes, "John Holmes, Superstar", "John Holmes: The Man, The Myth, The Legend", and "XXXL: The John Holmes Story".

Born in Ashville, Ohio, as John Curtis Estes, he knew very little of his father Carl Estes, a railroad worker, who walked out on the family when John was three or four years old. John's mother Mary, a devout Southern Baptist, married Harold Holmes a few years later and changed her children's surname to Holmes. His new stepfather proved to be a violent alcoholic who would come home inebriated, stumble about the house, and even vomit on the children. Mary Holmes later divorced him, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, with her children where they lived on welfare for a few years. When John was age eight, his mother met and married her third husband, Harold Bowman. They moved from Columbus and settled in nearby Pataskala, Ohio. After a few years of marriage, Bowman frequently beat Holmes, the youngest of four children, according to Sharon Holmes, his first wife. (read more . . . )

Rape pornography is a genre of pornography involving the depiction of rape.

There is disagreement among feminists and social conservatives over whether this form of pornography encourages men to commit rape, and whether it denigrates and devalues women. Numerous studies have produced different results to the correlation. Some also argue that rape fantasy is a sometimes sadomasochistic fantasy that can be enjoyed from either a passive or active perspective, by either men or women, with or without any desire to act a scene out in a role-play.

Rape pornography can be produced either by:

  • Actors pretending to be raped or raping — e.g., an actress pretends not to consent to sexual activity with one or more actors, but in reality is a consenting participant who may be acting in the scene for money, personal enjoyment, or other reasons. In this case, although the sex depicted is given the appearance of rape, all participants are actually consenting.
  • Real, actual rapes, recorded by the perpetrators. This method is largely hypothetical, as no examples of widely-available rape pornography produced in this manner have been documented.

Rape is also a popular theme in hentai. As Hentai is an animated depiction of sexual activities, there are no legal boundaries. Many anti-pornography protestors claim that rape-hentai encourages violent sexual behaviour as it often depicts acts that are performed in reality. (read more . . . )

Bukkake (Japanese: ブッカケ) listen  is a group sex practice that features a woman (or man) being ejaculated on by multiple men or women.

Theories as to the historical origins of bukkake vary, but one theory is that bukkake was popularized in Japan by Japanese adult video companies in the first half of the 1970s. The term Bukkake reached a wider audience in the United States through radio host Howard Stern when he mentioned the website Bukkake.com on his nationally syndicated radio program. Controversy arose regarding the meaning of the word when station managers began censoring its use, inadvertently creating more interest.

Some western pornographers also explore this fetish as the main feature of videos like John Thompson Producer with the series labeled German Goo Girls. The most popular titles made in the occident are Baker's Dozen by Brandon Iron and American Bukkake by JM Productions. Gay bukkake, and lesbian bukkake have surfaced in pornographic movies. Shauna Grant (born Colleen Marie Applegate on May 30, 1963March 21, 1984) was an American nude model and pornographic actress. She was sometimes credited as Callie Aimes, Callie Aims, or Colleen Applegate.

Grant was active in the adult industry from 1982-1984. She died, at age 20, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Shauna Grant's career and death were fictionalized as the basis for the television movie Shattered Innocence.

Born in Bellflower, California, Applegate grew up in the small town of Farmington, Minnesota, population 3,562 in 1984. Her family moved there from California in 1973 when her father took a managerial position with Central Telephone Company of Minnesota. She was a cheerleader in high school. Applegate graduated from Farmington High in 1981, but eschewed her job as a repair clerk with the phone company. Later that year she consumed a handful of prescription sinus pills in a suicide gesture; sessions at a counselling center did not provide much assistance for her. Applegate ran away from home and moved to California in March 1982, accompanied by her high school sweetheart, Mike Marcell. She left behind her parents, a brother, and three sisters.

The couple arrived in Los Angeles, California. Applegate and Marcell looked into a number of jobs in the first month. Little came of this until one of them saw an ad for World Modeling, an agency in Van Nuys. This business diligently sought attractive new recruits for "figure modeling." Accompanied by Marcell, Applegate visited agent Jim South, who set up a photo session with photographer J. Stephen Hicks. The pictorial's theme featured a mock camping set and was to be published by Club. Hicks reflected on Applegate's appearance and personality, saying "I deal with a lot of girls who are new in the business, a lot of young girls and a lot of girls from out of town. Colleen was so incredibly young and naive. She was completely un-hip and non-L.A." Her wholesome, "girl next door" looks soon landed her work posing for other magazines such as Hustler and Penthouse. India (birth name Shamika Brown) was trained as a dancer, but started doing adult films in 1996. She began as a stripper in Los Angeles, making the rounds of the various clubs, and was noticed by several adult-film producers.

Her dark, exotic look and petite frame served her well over the next five years, and she became a fixture in black-themed porn, especially in the anal sex sub-genre and Gonzo styled films. She also performed in lesbian themed films during this time. Most of her more than 150 films were based around women who (like her) have a large round buttocks.

After starring for several years at KaraDavis.com, an Internet porn site that features primarily interracial couplings of white men with black women, she started to work part-time at Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch, a legal brothel (which she finds safer and more profitable), and has cut down on the number of appearances in adult films.

India has also done mainstream work, as member of the musical group Harmony Innocents, which formed in 1994, and was signed with Quality records. Since then she has kept her interest in music alive throughout her career as an adult actress, appearing in several music videos for such artists as Madonna, Sisqó, Snoop-Doggy Dog, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Juvenile and Ja Rule and making appearances on The Howard Stern Show, The Tera Patrick Show and doing many personal appearances. (read more . . . )

Missy Monroe

Missy Monroe (born August 22, 1984) is the stage name for an American pornographic actress.

Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, Missy's mother was a hospital worker (who worked the graveyard shifts) while her father was a "bad boy", who worked a variety of jobs including truck driving and paramedic work. Her parents apparently split up after she was 12 — an age where, according to her, she engaged in sexual activities and troublemaking at school from the eighth grade onward.

By the time she graduated high school, she was 17 and had slept with (in her estimation) 150 male companions. After graduation, she worked service-sector jobs (notably J.C. Penney and Domino's Pizza), and experimented with recreational drugs including marijuana.

Like many pornographic actresses, she began her adult entertainment career in 2003 by topless dancing, the specific club she worked at was the famous Cheetah's. Her entry into pornographic modeling was a photoshoot in April 2003.

From October 2003 to April 2004, she moved to Los Angeles and stopped working in the industry due to her romantic relationship with a mechanic. Due to his later job displacement and his unwillingness to have her work, she ended the relationship with him.

For a time, she roomed with pornographic actress Genesis Skye for roughly six weeks in 2006; a major fight between the two became the focus of news and tabloid reports — and resulted in Genesis Skye's moving out of the apartment.

Monroe often receives aggressive anal sex, and launches out plenty of dirty talk during her scenes. She is also known as a 'squirter', often appearing to ejaculate during sex scenes. (read more . . . )

Nina Hartley

Nina Hartley (born Marie Louise Hartman on March 11, 1959 in Berkeley, California) is an American pornographic actress and sex educator.

Hartley was born to a liberal Jewish family, though her parents were Zen Buddhists when she was a child. Hartley attended San Francisco State University's undergraduate nursing school and graduated summa cum laude. She is a registered nurse. In her sophomore year of nursing school she started working in the adult entertainment industry by dancing in strip clubs, including Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre in San Francisco.

She made her foray into the world of pornographic movies during her junior year, in 1984. Her debut performance was in the film Educating Nina which was produced by the veteran porn star Juliet Anderson (better known as Aunt Peg), and this proved to be a massive hit. Since then she has gone on to feature in over 400 first-run adult films, and has become one of the most enduring and recognizable performers in the industry. She is best known within the adult film industry for her "bubble butt" (often referred to as the "best ass in the business"), interracial scenes and her lesbian scenes.

Politically, Hartley is a socialist and outspoken sex-positive feminist. Addressing other women, she said "Sex isn't something men do to you. It isn't something men get out of you. Sex is something you dive into with gusto and like it every bit as much as he does." Hartley has been an advocate for the adult film industry's right to exist, and, prior to the rise to stardom of Jenna Jameson, had often been called upon when television news programs and talk shows required an articulate, leading adult film actress to support the pro side. She appeared most notably on The Oprah Winfrey Show with fellow porn actress Ona Zee. The two came under hard scrutiny from the mostly female audience, but refused to back down and were outspoken in their support of the industry. She and Ona Zee also spoke out strongly against illegal drugs in the industry. (read more . . . )

Sex tourism is travel to engage in sexual intercourse or sexual activity with prostitutes, and is typically undertaken internationally by tourists from wealthier countries whose payment for services may then be rendered either in cash or in kind.

The World Tourism Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, defines sex tourism as "trips organized from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination". The U.N. opposes sex tourism citing health, social and cultural consequences for both tourist home countries and destination countries, especially in situations exploiting gender, age, social and economic inequalities in sex tourism destinations.

Attractions for sex tourists can include reduced costs for services in the destination country, along with either legal prostitution or indifferent law enforcement and access to child prostitution. National destinations for sex tourists include Thailand, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Cuba.

An individual city or region can have a particular reputation as a sex tourist destination. Many of these coincide with major red-light districts, and include Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Zona Norte in Tijuana, Mexico; Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket in Thailand; Vladivostok in Russian Far East, destination for Japanese sex tourists[1], and Angeles City, the site of a former United States military base in the province of Pampanga, Philippines.

In the United States, prostitution is largely illegal, with the exception of rural areas of the state of Nevada; these have become a sex tourist destination for some Americans. To a lesser extent, several other large cities in the U.S. are also domestic sex tourist destinations despite legal sanctions on prostitution.

Conversely, prostitution is a legal activity in a growing list of other nations worldwide including in many of these destinations. (read more . . . )

Kitten Natividad

Kitten Natividad (born Francesca Isabel Natividad on February 14, 1948) is a Mexican American film actress and exotic dancer, noted for her 44-inch chest and appearances in cult films by her ex-partner, director Russ Meyer. Natividad was also named Miss Nude Universe of 1970 and 1971.

Natividad was born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, the eldest of nine children, and did not speak English until she was 10. At that time her mother married a U.S. citizen and they moved to Texas. After moving to California, she worked as a maid and cook for Stella Stevens and as a key punch operator for IBM before turning to go-go dancing to make ends meet. Her stage name Kitten came from her shyness. At age 21, she had her first breast implant surgery in Tijuana, where it was legal, in order to move into topless dancing. The silicone used was an industrial variety, which may have led to her later cancer.

Natividad was introduced to Meyer by fellow dancer Shari Eubank, a performer in Meyer's 1975 film Supervixens. Meyer hired her as the narrator of his movie Up!, where she was shown sitting nude in a tree, quoting the poetry of Hilda Doolittle and acting as a Greek chorus to the nonsensical action. Meyer was so impressed he wanted her to star in his next feature, Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens (one of several collaborations between Meyer and film critic Roger Ebert), but he paid for a second breast enhancement and voice lessons to eliminate her accent. She left her husband for Meyer during the filming, and they lived together as a couple for most of the next 15 years. (read more . . . )

Midori

Midori (born Michele Evette Watley on July 19, 1968 in Durham, North Carolina, USA) is an American porn star. Midori is easily one of the most famous female African American porn stars. In addition to her other films, she is a singer. Midori's career began when she had a minor appearance in the Eddie Murphy comedy Coming to America in 1988 (she was one of the bathers).

She was also featured in Rodney Evans' 1996 documentary The Unveiling, which also features burlesque legend Dixie Evans. The documentary indicates how hard Michele had to work as a dancer to give her best and not just be one of the many. Other things Michele did: she was as a background singer for various rock groups, worked as a model for magazines such as ELLE, toured with a theatrical stage play, and served as a hair model for Vidal Sassoon.

Although Michele filmed her first hardcore video in 1995 - David Christopher' Pussyman Auditions 3 - it took her almost one year to decide if she really wanted to be a porn actress. Once she decided to act in porn movies in 1996 she was picked up by Video Team and rapidly built up her career. With Video Team she also wrote and directed her own movies. Midori did work with many other studios as well and has filmed various porn movies to this day.

She was the first female Afro-American to win an AVN Award for her performance in the porn drama Westside with Lexington Steele and Inari Vachs. In addition Midori is the only African-American actress to have been honored with over 10 awards, titles & nominations in the history of adult entertainment worldwide.

Midori often paired with Afro-American porn stars like Lexington Steele and Mr. Marcus in anal themed films, nevertheless she has her most popular fan-base for her interracial, and anal scenes. Midori shot only one lesbian scene with Felecia in Sista 5 at the start of her career in 1996. Since then lesbian themed films with an all-girl cast no longer belong to her repertoire, compared to other famous female porn stars who started their career alongside Midori in the middle of the 90s, including actresses Crystal Knight and India. Lili St. Cyr (June 3, 1918 - January 29, 1999), was an American striptease artist.

Born Willis Marie Van Schaack in Minneapolis, Minnesota, little is known about the childhood that developed St. Cyr into the outspoken celebrity she became. Her grandparents, the Klarquists, reared her and her two show business sisters, Dardy Orlando and Barbara Moffett.

Having taken ballet lessons throughout her youth, she began to dance professionally as a chorus line girl in Hollywood. Unlike other ladies who have stroke-of-luck stories about being plucked from the chorus line and upped to a feature, Lili had to beg her manager at the club to let her do a solo act. Her self-choreographed act led her to bigger and better things, namely a bit part at a club called the Music Box, with an act called the Duncan Sisters. It was here that she came to a revelation: A dancer's salary was 1/18 of what the featured star's salary was. What was the difference? The featured star was nude. Inhibitions seemed insignificant compared to the drive for success.

Lili’s stripping debut was at the Music Box, in an Ivan Fehnova production. The producer had not even seen her perform - her striking looks were what won him over. The act was a disaster. Instead of firing her, Fehnova reconsidered and put together a new act. At the end of the dance, a stagehand would pull a fishing rod attached to Lili’s G-String. It would fly into the balcony and the lights would go dim. This famous act was known as The Flying G, and such creative shows would be Lili’s trademark. (read more . . . )

Gokkun (ゴックン?) is a genre of Japanese adult video in which a woman consumes copious amounts of semen. The word "gokkun" is an onomatopoeia, which translates into English as "gulp"—i.e., the sound one makes swallowing. Whereas bukkake titles predominantly involve men ejaculating on a woman's face, gokkun titles predominantly involve men ejaculating into a woman's mouth. It is not uncommon, in a single movie, for a gokkun actress to swallow more than a dozen cum shots; although typically the gokkun actress is the recipient of semen from only a few men at a time.

Themes often found in gokkun titles include women drinking or licking extreme amounts of semen off plates or drinking semen from martini glasses, jars or beakers, etc. In addition, it is not uncommon for multiple women to participate together in a gokkun title, snowballing before swallowing the ejaculate.

Many Japanese adult video companies specialize in the production of gokkun titles, including Moodyz, Waap, Soft on Demand, Idea Pocket, Shuttle Japan, Milky Cat and Mister Bukkake. (read more . . . )

A blue film is a film associated with the amateur underground pornography industry in India. Other names for the industry include the more reserved 'human trafficking,' which refers to the perceived belief that participants have little or no control over their participation in the films due to economic pressures from the Indian underground crime syndicates, as they are 'trafficked' around.

While the Indian government has attempted to limit or prevent the production and distribution of such tapes, manufacturers have become increasingly creative, even following the precedents set by the Japanese and American pornography industries and offering the films in animated format.

The name ostensibly comes from the fact that to maintain anonymity in the past, video participants masked their identities via blue bars across their eyes added during video post-processing. Unverified online sources also indicate that the slang finds its origins in that during the 1980s, pornographic video casettes were sealed using blue tape.

In 2005, Mohit Suri directed a movie called Kalyug in 2005, starring Deepal Shaw and Kunal Khemu. The movie was produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, Bollywood producers notorious for remaking popular Hollywood films with Indian actors.

The film attempted to reveal aspects of the industry as a doppelganger to its more mainstream Bollywood counterpart. It was later renamed Kalyug, due to controversy over its title. (read more . . . )

Pink film (ピンク映画 Pinku eiga?) is a style of Japanese softcore pornographic theatrical film. Films of this genre first appeared in the early 1960s, and dominated the Japanese domestic cinema from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s.

In the 1960s, the pink films were largely the the product of small, independent studios. In the 1970s, some of Japan's major studios, facing the loss of their theatrical audience, took over the pink film. With their access to higher production-values and talent, some of these films became critical and popular successes. Though the appearance of the AV (adult video) took away most of the pink film audience in the 1980s, films in this genre are still being produced.

The pink film, or "eroduction" as it was first called, is a cinematic genre without exact equivalent in the West. Though called pornography, the terms "erotica," "soft porn" and "sexploitation" have been suggested as more appropriate, although none of these precisely matches the pink film genre. Due to the nature of Japanese censorship laws, the display of genitals, and even pubic hair, were long-held taboos in the genre. This restriction forced Japanese filmmakers to develop sometimes elaborate means of avoiding showing the "working parts", as Richie puts it.

Some have claimed that it is this censorship which gives the Japanese erotic cinema its particular style. Donald Richie says, "American pornography is kept forever on its elemental level because, showing all, it need do nothing else; Japanese eroductions have to do something else since they cannot show all. The stultified impulse has created some extraordinary works of art, a few films among them." Writing in 1972, at the commencement of the Second Wave of pink film, he qualifies his statement with, "None of these, however, are found among eroductions." Contrasting the pink film with Western pornographic films, Pia Harritz says, "What really stands out is the ability of pinku eiga to engage the spectator in more than just scenes with close-ups of genitals and finally the complexity in the representation of gender and the human mind." Asia Carrera (born Jessica Andrea Steinhauser on August 6, 1973 in New York City) is a former American pornographic actress.

Asia Carrera was born in New York City to a Japanese father and German mother and is the oldest of four siblings. She was raised in Little Silver, New Jersey, attending Little Silver Public Schools and Red Bank Regional High School.

She studied piano as a child, and performed at Carnegie Hall twice before the age of 15. By 16 she taught English at Tsuruga College in Japan. When she was 17, she ran away from home because she felt her parents put too much pressure on her to succeed academically. She won a full academic scholarship to Rutgers University and is a member of Mensa.

Carrera worked during the early 1990s as a dancer at several go-go bars in her home state of New Jersey. After doing at least one photoshoot for an adult magazine, she put together a demo porn tape in 1993. At the end of that year she relocated to California to break into the pornography business and she announced her retirement at the end of 2003. She is sometimes credited as Asia or Jessica Bennett.

Carrera has also been involved in writing, producing, and directing movies, as well as doing all her own make-up and hair-styling, and doing much of the hair and make-up for other actresses in the same movies. (read more . . . )

X-rated (also known as X certificate or X classification) is a film rating indicating strong adult content, typically sexual content and nudity, or violence and profanity.

In Australia, X-rated is a legal term. The Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), a government institution, issues ratings for all movies and television shows sold or aired. Movies showing explicit, non-simulated sex are rated "X". "X" rated movies are not permitted to be sold in most States, but possession of such movies is legal and they are sold in the Australian Capital Territory; the constitution forbids restraint in goods and trade between the States, so they are available in all States by mail-order. An attempt to change the classification ratings such that some of the material in the "X" category would be banned and the remainder would be available under the new category "NVE" (an abbreviation for Non-Violent Erotica), failed in the Senate partly due to the belief of some Senators that the new categories were less restrictive than the old.

The proposed category of NVE held tighter restrictions of content in sexually explicit films. Although the new rating was rejected, all States and Territories agreed in a review of the OFLC's guidelines to introduce the new, tighter content restrictions in the "X" category. The new guidelines make unambiguous statements relating to fetish and violence in this category. "Fetishes such as body piercing, application of substances such as candle wax, 'golden showers', bondage, spanking and fisting are not permitted" and "No depiction of violence...is allowed in the category". If such content is in a film, particularly violence in a plot development context (i.e. separate from sexually explicit scenes), it is often edited out prior to submission to the OFLC to avoid being "Refused Classification" (effectively banning the film). Deepthroating is a form of oral sex, specifically fellatio, in which the whole erect penis is taken into the mouth and throat. Many men derive great sexual pleasure from this act, since the penis can be stimulated by the mouth, tongue, and throat of their partner. The adjective deep and the noun throat are often concatenated to form the verb deepthroat.

Deepthroating was featured in the 1972 pornographic movie Deep Throat, which brought widespread attention to the act and popularized it for many Americans. Of the thousands of women who have performed in adult films and videos over the decades, relatively few have demonstrated this talent, although it is becoming more common. Accomplished deepthroat performers can stick their tongue out while holding the position and looking at the camera. Penises that are long but not thick are more often seen being deepthroated than thick penises; rarely are penises that are both long and thick deepthroated.

As popular as this sexual act is in pornographic films as indicated by the popularity of pornographic actors who can perform it, it is not usually specifically represented in adult video as a distinct fetish, and usually is found under the generic category "oral". Many female performers who also specialize in anal can also deepthroat, thus many anal fetish videos also feature deepthroat.

Often, deepthroat is portrayed in rough-sex settings in a manner referred to as "Throat Gagging" and "Face Fucking", which are usually faster and more dominated by the male who attempts to force the deepthroat--sometimes going to degrading extremes when the person deepthroating indicates they do not enjoy it. If the deepthroater is a woman, she may wear eye makeup that runs when her eyes water. This can make a woman look defiled by the act and some find it stimulating. (read more . . . )

BDSM is any of a number of related patterns of human sexual behavior. The major subgroupings are described in the abbreviation "BDSM" itself:

Many of the specific practices in BDSM are those which, if performed in neutral or nonsexual contexts, could be considered unpleasant, undesirable or abusive. For example, while pain, physical restraint and servitude are traditionally inflicted on persons against their will and to their detriment, in BDSM, these activities are engaged in with the mutual consent of the participants, and typically for mutual enjoyment.

This emphasis on informed consent and safety is also known as SSC (safe, sane and consensual), though others prefer the term RACK (risk-aware consensual kink), believing that it places more emphasis on acknowledging the fact that all activities are potentially risky. There is discussion and dispute about the meaning or intent of the terms, but in essence, both terms refer to all participants acknowledging and accepting some level of risk.(read more . . . )

While some authors assert that Burlesque is a direct descendant of the Commedia dell'arte, the term 'burlesque' for a parody or comedy of manners appears about the same time as the first appearance of commedia dell'arte.

With its origins in nineteenth century music hall entertainments and vaudeville, in the early twentieth century burlesque emerged as a populist blend of satire, performance art, and adult entertainment, that featured strip tease and broad comedy acts that derived their name from the low comedy aspects of the literary genre known as burlesque.

In burlesque, performers, usually female, often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music, and dramatic lighting, and may even include novelty acts, such as fire-breathing or demonstrations of unusual flexibility, to enhance the impact of their performance.

Put simply, burlesque means "in an upside down style". Like its cousin, commedia dell'arte, burlesque turns social norms head over heels. Burlesque is a style of live entertainment that encompasses pastiche, parody, and wit. The genre traditionally encompasses a variety of acts such as dancing girls, chanson singers, comedians, mime artists, and strip tease artistes, all satirical and with a saucy edge. The strip tease element of burlesque became subject to extensive local legislation, leading to a theatrical form that titillated without falling foul of censors. (read more . . . )

Marie Luv (born November 1, 1981) is an American pornographic actress, exotic dancer and glamour model.

Born in Hacienda Heights, California as Quiana Marie Bryant, her first job was a cashier on an Air Force base commissary at 14. After graduating high school from Cheviot Hills (Culver City, CA), she was a mainstream model who was approached by representatives from Hustler magazine. Through them, she started off with seven movies under the stage name of "Destiny". After her initial work was discovered by her loved ones, she ceased doing it until she got the support of her mother. As Marie Luv, she re-entered the industry, beginning with pictorials then working into hardcore pornographic movies.

Unlike other African American pornographic actresses, she is not typecast in the "ghetto booty" or in other stereotypical pornographic venues, although she has and continues to participate in those titles. However, she also works in the same videos as non-African American actresses. Marie Luv mainly performs in interracial scenes with white males. She primarily shoots with Digital Playground and has worked both feature and Gonzo pornographic films. She mainly works with male porn stars, and is admittedly uncomfortable doing lesbian film work (i.e. the "girl/girl scenes").

Fellatio is oral sex performed upon the human penis. It may be performed to induce orgasm and ejaculation of semen, or it can be used as foreplay, prior to sexual intercourse. Although the technique usually involves sucking rather than blowing, the act of giving fellatio is commonly referred to as giving a blow job. Fellatio—as well as cunnilingus—can be referred to as "giving head".

Some receivers regard receiving oral sex as an ego boost, believing that such an act is a form of dominance over their sexual partner because of the overt submissive nature of the act; the giver must often be on their knees before the receiver to perform the act of pleasure. Conversely, the receiver is willingly placing their genitals in an environment filled with teeth so the dominance could work both ways with a suitably aggressive giver, particularly if the receiver is restrained (in bondage, perhaps). The practice of fellatio was said to have been introduced by the women of Lesbos, who were said to whiten their lips as though with semen.

The Ancient Indian Kama Sutra, dating from the first centuries AD, describes oral sex, discussing fellatio in great detail and only briefly mentioning cunnilingus. However, according to the Kama Sutra, fellatio is above all a characteristic of eunuchs (or, according to other translations, of effeminate homosexuals or transwomen similar to the modern Hijra of India), who use their mouths as a substitute for female genitalia. The author states that it is also practiced by "unchaste women," but mentions widespread traditional concerns about this being a degrading or unclean practice, with known practitioners being evaded as love partners in large parts of the country. He seems to agree with these attitudes to some extent, claiming that "a wise man" should not engage in that form of intercourse, while acknowledging that it can be appropriate in some (unspecified) cases. Cunnilingus is the act of performing oral sex, using the mouth and tongue to stimulate the female genitals. The clitoris is particularly noted for stimulation as it is often the most sensitive part of the female genitalia. The term comes from an alternative Latin word for the vulva (cunnus) and from the Latin word for tongue (lingua). Some women achieve orgasm easily from clitoral stimulation as part of cunnilingus. As in all human sexual behaviour, the variety of techniques in cunnilingus and individual responses to them are varied.

The clitoris is the most sexually sensitive part of the body for almost all women, but may be too sensitive to pleasantly stimulate directly at times, especially in early stages of arousal. It is often best to begin with a gentler, less focused stimulation of the labia and the whole genital area. The tip, blade, or underside of the tongue can be used, as can the nose, chin, lips and, with caution, the teeth. Movements can be slow or fast, regular or erratic, firm or soft according to the recipient's preference. The tongue can be inserted into the vagina, either stiffened or moving. Humming to cause vibration while performing cunnilingus is often considered to be especially arousing, with certain pitches, rhythms or tunes thought to be particularly effective by different people.

Cunnilingus is easily accompanied by the insertion of finger(s) or a sex toy into the vagina, which allows for the simultaneous stimulation of the g-spot, and/or into the anus, either of which many women find produce very intense sensations. (read more . . . )

A cum shot (sometimes come shot, Facial, pop shot or money shot) is the film or portion of a film depicting of a man shooting cum (semen) onto either his partner's or his own body — especially the chest, vulva, stomach, face, anus, or buttocks — conventionally displayed, in pornographic film, in order to indicate the completion of a sexual act.

Used since early times, the cum shot was usually an ejaculation near the anus or lower back or onto the face depending on the sexual position portrayed.[citation needed] Since the 1990s, cum shot, as a term, broadened to refer to any ejaculation, onto someone or something. If semen is directed at the recipient's face, the camera shot is called a facial. A film's editor may emphasize orgasm by multiple ejaculation scenes or replays of ejaculations. It is believed the cum shot adds a sense of authenticity to a staged sexual act because, unlike a facial expression or dialogue, it is difficult to fake convincingly.

When the cum shot is from a masturbatory pornography, the semen can be directed at several places, some of which may not even be on the body. Bodily destinations can include the abdomen, the face/shoulders (should the semen shoot far enough), the legs, or even the mouth through autofellatio. Locations beyond the body are usually predetermined sets, including wall mirrors, glass tables (for the camera to shoot under) and black table cloths.

There are several variations of the cum shot, including the creampie. The "creampie", an ejaculation into the vagina, anus or mouth of the actor's partner, is called a cum shot if the camera lingers past the moment of orgasm and then records the orifice oozing or expelling semen. Objects or clothing may be targeted in ejaculation, such as stocking-clad legs or a container. The consumption of semen — sometimes advertised as "cumsumption" (a portmanteau of "cum consumption") — is the primary feature of the Japanese gokkun genre of pornography. (read more . . . )

Group sex is sexual behaviour involving more than two participants at the same time. The main focus of this page is group sex among humans; however, group sex also exists with other species in the animal kingdom -- e.g., bighorn sheep and bonobos.

Any and all sexual behaviour performed by two people can be a part of group sex, as well as a number of behaviors only possible with more than two people. Group sex involving one participant being penetrated by multiple people is sometimes termed a gang bang.

The same safe sex considerations that apply to one-on-one sex apply to group sex, for the same reasons. People who have group sex may have higher numbers of sexual partners, and may for this reason be more likely to have sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or to be at risk for STIs than those who have fewer sexual partners. Group sex can occur amongst people of all sexual orientations and genders.

Group sex may involve three or more people of any gender or sexual orientation. The events themselves may be characterized by sex; for example, a straight group sex session would involve only heterosexual sex. Some venues for group sex may be intended for a particular group or groups of people; for example, many sex parties in the United States are restricted to women or couples and it's in these parties homosexual contact between women is common. In the gay male community, there are nightclubs, bath houses, and internet groups that organize and participate in group sex. Different types of group sex may or may not involve switching partners. Some sex clubs, for example, require entrants to come in pairs and do not typically involve actual physical contact between people in different pairs. Group sex may involve a specific set of sexual activities; for example, some involve BDSM, while "tobylove" and "vanilla" group sex does not. (read more . . . )

Engraving by Félicien Rops for Le Diable au Corps, 1865.

The sexual position 69 is one of the most commonly known sexual positions. In this position, two people orient themselves such that each person's mouth is near the other's genitals, enabling them to perform mutual oral sex. This position can be performed in same-sex or opposite-sex pairings.

This can be done lying down, one on top of the other or side by side, or alternatively, one partner can stand while holding the other upside down. In this position, the genitals are approached from the opposite direction, thereby creating a sensation different from that of ordinary oral sex.

In this position, a woman's clitoris is licked from top to bottom, and it may be licked through the clitoral hood, providing a buffer if the clitoris is too sensitive for direct stimulation. A man's frenulum rubs against the roof of the performing partner's mouth, while the foreskin and the front of the glans may be stimulated by their tongue. One variation includes digital penetration of either partner's anus or vagina. (read more . . . )

Johann Nepomuk Geiger, watercolor, 1840.

A handjob or hand job is a slang term referring to the sexual stimulation of a penis using the hands and fingers. It is a form of outercourse or non-penetrative sex and, not involving the exchange of bodily fluids, is a type of safer sex. The manual stimulation of a female's sex organs is usually called fingering, although sometimes "handjob" is used to refer to this act as well.

A common handjob technique - First, the giving partner grips the receiving partner's penis with their entire hand similar to making a fist (except the fist is made around the penis). An alternative grip is to use only a couple fingers wrapped around the penis. Second, the giving partner moves their hand in an up and down motion, which causes stimulation to the shaft and glans (head) of the penis. Some people prefer to use lubrication to prevent friction on the penis. There are many other techniques that can be used, and some involve the use of both hands. Since each individual male is different, it generally takes patience and practice on behalf of both partners before the most pleasurable hand technique is discovered. (read more . . . )

Non-penetrative sex (also known as outercourse) is sexual activity without vaginal, anal, and possibly oral penetration, as opposed to intercourse. The terms Mutual masturbation and Frottage are also used, but with slightly different emphases. NPS and outercourse are rather new, not generally accepted terms, which is why some subsumed practices usually are still called "intercourse". No bodily fluids are intended to be exchanged, and outercourse is therefore often considered a practice of safer sex as well as of birth control. Outercourse in preparation for intercourse can form part of foreplay.

A number of BDSM activities do not involve penetration. However they are not generally considered under the same heading, possibly because they involve their own special risks or possibly because they are not substitutes for "having sex". (read more . . . )

Hentai is a Japanese word that can be used to mean "metamorphosis" or "abnormality". In Japan "hentai" has a strong negative connotation, and is commonly used to mean "sexually perverted". The term is used as slang for sexually explicit or pornographic comics and animation, particularly Japanese anime, manga and computer games (see Japanese pornography).

In Japan, sexually explicit material is more often referred to as "jū hachi kin" (18禁; prohibited for sale to persons under 18), "ecchi/Hentai anime" (sexual/pornographic anime), "seinen" (成年; adult, not to be confused with 青年 young adult), or with the prefix "ero-" (derived from "erotic").

Hentai anime and manga allow elements of sexual fantasy to be represented in ways that would be impossible to film. This may include portrayals of sexual acts which are physically impossible, unacceptable in society, or run counter to social norms. Examples would include bukkake and group sex. Other forms of extreme sexual activity found in Hentai anime and manga include bondage, creatures with tentacles, or other fetishes. Western audiences gained exposure to Hentai anime and manga primarily through the Internet. (read more . . . )

Cartoon pornography is the portrayal of illustrated or animated fictional characters in erotic or sexual situations. This includes but is not limited to parody renditions of famous cartoons and comics.

Some artists use parodies of pre-existing cartoon or comics characters, drawing for example Walt Disney's famous princesses, television characters, or comic book characters in various states of undress and possibly engaged in sexual activity.

Other favorite sources of pornographic cartoon parodies include Warner Brothers cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Pepe LePew; newspaper comic strip characters such as Dennis the Menace, the Family Circus, and Luann; and such television or movie characters as those of The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Star Trek, Star Wars, Naruto, Danny Phantom Dragon Ball and lately, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Porn creep is the process by which it is claimed sexually explicit content enters American pop culture. The term is analogous to Paul Fussell's "prole creep," which describes the process of markers of lower class gradually becoming more broadly accepted. Some people blame (or credit) the abundance of sexual imagery and innuendo in movies, television and advertising on the increased accessibility and "cool factor" of pornography. It is also now a colloquialism to describe a condition in which a person is unable to engage in any form of sexual activity without the presence of pornographic stimulus.

The term porn creep is related to the psychological concept of escalation in violent and/or sexual behavior, whereby the graphic or physical nature of certain acts becomes more extreme (or escalates) over time.

Naomi Wolf, a famous feminist author from the 1990s penned an article entitled The Porn Myth in New York Magazine in which she famously argued, "In the end, porn doesn’t whet men’s appetites—it turns them off the real thing".

Some critics express skepticism over the existence and significance of porn creep. For example, Eric Schlosser, in Reefer Madness, argues that cultural fascination with pornographic imagery could actually decrease as such material becomes more commonplace and less controversial, pointing to the example of Denmark, where despite the legality and wide availability of pornographic material, public interest in, and consumption of, pornography has dropped since the 1970s. While such performers may be true teens of 18 or 19 years of age, they may also be in their early 20s or older. Teen pornography usually focuses on common themes that emphasize the performers' youth, including:

  • innocence or sexual inexperience
  • newfound interest in sex or sexual awakening
  • curiosity and eagerness to explore sexuality
  • appearance of youth — natural, and/or accentuated with props (such as braces on the teeth, pig-tail hairdos, white socks and mary-jane shoes, Catholic school girl skirts, lack of makeup, etc.)

Teen pornography is a popular subject of pornographic magazines, pornographic videos, Internet pornography, comic books and other media. Material that is considered teen pornography may in addition be classified into other genres, such as race-oriented pornography, hardcore, fetish, etc. Gay pornography may similarly feature young performers in a fetishistic sub-genre. Interracial pornography is pornography that depicts sexual activity between performers of different races or ethnic groups.

Initially, the term referred specifically to pornography involving performers of African and European descent. Today, it is often used to refer to any performance involving actors of different races or ethnicities, although it is most commonly used in its original sense.

Although interracial pornography has always been a genre of pornography, it began growing in visibility during the 1980s. Its popularity grew during the 1990s, and in the 2000s it become a prominent aspect of pornography. In the United States, interracial pornography frequently depict performers using racial stereotypes.

In the past, some of porn's leading white ladies allegedly were warned by racist producers to avoid African-Americans, both on-screen and in their personal lives. One rationale was the wide-spread belief that appearing in interracial pornography would ruin a white performer's career, although some observers have said that there is no evidence that this is true. Adult Video News critic Sheldon Ranz wrote in 1977 that "we keep hearing a lot about 'the powers that be' that tell white women that it's not in their 'interest' to work with blacks. Is there any proof that Ginger [Lynn]'s scene with Tony El-Lay in Undressed Rehearsal hurt her career? Nina Hartley still gets lots of bookings in Southern strip clubs, especially Texas, even though she is an avowed interracialist." (read more . . . )

Pornography based on the ethnicity of performers is often objected to on the grounds that it is racist, frequently representing its subjects as ethnic stereotypes, and also on the grounds that it objectifies its subjects, presenting ethnicity as a "flavor" of sexual encounter. Nevertheless, it remains extremely popular, both on its own, and in conjunction with other genres of pornography.

Where the general audience is appealed to, ethnic pornography typically features ethnic groups that are familiar in a particular country, such as members of significant minority groups, particularly those seen as most exotic. They may be seen as sexually unattainable, and therefore mysterious and exciting, or as promiscuous or sexually biddable. In the wake of the current conflict between the West and the Muslim world, pornography catering for Westerners' curiosity about Muslim men and women has also appeared. A new genre of Iraq war-themed pornography, depicting Western men and Arab women, has arisen in the mid-2000s, perhaps inspired by the Abu Ghraib scandal.

Ethnic pornography may also serve the audience of that subset of a particular ethnic group who are only interested in looking at people of their own group. For example, there are a number of Jewish pornography websites whose material seems primarily directed at Jews or Asian themed sites that target East Asian men. There are also pornography websites aimed at the Arab, Indian and Pakistani markets, countries where traditional morals and attitudes toward women make dating difficult or impossible for many young men.

Ethnic pornography also frequently depicts sex acts between people of different ethnicities, commonly known as interracial pornography, perhaps for visual contrast, or (particularly in the U.S.) for extra titillation by breaking taboos regarding the depiction of ethnic stereotypes and even the highly sensitive taboo subjects of ethnic tensions and old anti-miscegenation laws. Fragonard's The Swing (1767)

Upskirt is a slang term usually referring to up skirt photography, images of the view up a woman's skirt (as seen from underneath), including shots of a woman's underwear, or exposing her vulva or buttocks. Alternately, an "upskirt" may be a video, an illustration, or simply a view.

Upskirt photographs are common on pornographic websites. While upskirt images may be captured consensually, many viewers seek these images taken surreptitiously (and presumably without the subject's consent). The creation and viewing of this type of upskirt are considered forms of voyeurism. The advent of cell phones fitted with cameras (a.k.a. camera phones) is often credited for the surge in these types of photographs. (read more . . . )

Spinner is a term used primarily in the adult film industry and the sex worker industry, but has also gained a small amount of mainstream use.

It refers to an actress with a tiny frame, usually very thin and having small breasts. Such a woman is so small that she can supposedly mount a man's penis and easily spin around on it. Two prominent examples of "spinners" in the porn industry are Kobe Tai and Nikki Charm.

The term has also been used to refer to an adult website which rotates ("spins") its content automatically and regularly, or which performs some advanced content matching to assist visitors in finding exactly what they are seeking. (read more . . . )

Gonzo pornography is a filming style of adult video. It is characterized by a filming style which attempts to place the viewer directly into the scene. The name is a reference to gonzo journalism, in which the reporter is part of the event taking place. By analogy, gonzo pornography puts the camera right into the action -- often with one or more of the participants both filming and performing sex acts -- without the usual separation characteristic of conventional porn and cinema. Deeply influenced by amateur pornography, basic gonzo porn tends to use far fewer full-body/wide shots, and more close-ups (see Reality porn). The loose and direct camera work often includes "tight" shots of the lower genitalia, unlike much of traditional porn.

Gonzo videos tend to focus far less on the plots, extended dialogue, elaborate costumes/sets, and artistic camerawork commonly found in conventional porn. However, due to the explosive growth in its popularity since the mid-1990s, gonzo has attained mainstream popularity; several individually distinct styles of no-frills, filmed pornography can be labeled gonzo porn. Today, several companies produce gonzo that has excellent lighting and sound quality, (temporary) lingerie costuming, and is shot in various rooms of luxury homes. One trait that all gonzo films share, though, is a much greater emphasis on intense (almost hyperactive) sexual performance. Regardless of camera techniques or the degree of director involvement in the scenes, a gonzo film has "more sex", per se, than a traditional (e.g., Vivid or Adam&Eve brand) adult video. Gonzo scenes tend to run longer; it is common for a single boy-girl scene to run anywhere from fifteen to thirty minutes. (read more . . . )

Lolita pornography, also known as "lollipop", is a type of pornography in which features pubescent models who are or only appear to be under the legal age to appear in porn. While the term lolita pornography can describe child pornography involving underage pubescent girls, in the porn industry, the term lolita porn describes porn featuring barely-legal models whom the producers claim to have been of legal age to appear in pornography (18 years or older in most countries) when photographed. Nevertheless, even completely legal Lolita pornography tends to encounter social opposition in much of the western world. The genre's name comes from the Vladimir Nabokov novel Lolita, in which a much older man becomes sexually obsessed with the pubescent title character. Lolita pornography often differs from teen pornography in that while teen pornography will usually focuses on common themes that emphasize the performers' youth and inexperience, commercial lolita pornography tends to try and accentuate their "young girl" appearance in a number of ways, including:

  • shaving their pubic hair
  • childish hairstyles such as pigtails
  • posing with teddy bears, dolls or other toys
  • wearing clothes typically associated with young girls, such as a schoolgirl uniform and undergarments decorated with cartoon characters
  • posing on sets intended to evoke a girlish feel, such as a "childish" or "teenagerish" bedroom, classroom, girls' locker room or shower, school gym or bathroom (evoking children's bathtime routine)
  • childish mannerisms such as twisting their hair, chewing on their fingernails or eating candy (especially sucking on hard candy, evoking fellatio)

Sometimes lolita pornography is classified in the teen pornography genre or as a sub-genre of teen pornography.

In cultures with a weaker taboo against ephebophilia, however, it is often commonplace, most notably in Japan, where actresses who take part in it are usually described as kogals or schoolgirls, and where even in mainstream pornography adult actresses often do their best to seem childish. Japanese pornography has some unique features which separate it from pornography in other cultures, especially Western pornography. It is quite common and frequently translated and exported to Western cultures because of its large spectrum of themes and media. Japanese erotica has a reputation in the West as being sado-masochistic and youth-centered due to cultural differences and various taboos.

The concept of "pornography" may have emerged in the Edo period when every form of popular culture flourished. All forms of pornography flourished with the sole exception of figures and statues. This does not mean there were no works of erotica; these early works were by highly literate nobles and were often considered works of art. Both Japanese mythology and Shinto have few references to sexuality. An act of sex was an act of happiness without guilt or sin.

In the Edo period, pornography flourished due to the unique characteristic of the city of Edo. In this period, men (who were the only consumers of pornographic material at that time) made up well over 60% of the population. These men came from all over Japan to work, and remained there for years before returning to their hometown to marry (or to their wives), having learned valuable skills like reading, writing, and crafts. The disproportionate population balance and excess of young males demanded means to fulfil their sexual needs. State controlled prostitutions like Yoshiwara were an answer, and pornography was another.

There were many pornographic materials. Shunga or pornographic wood-block pictures were printed with all imaginable situations. These were often made into a book with sentences to describe their situations as well as to offer brief descriptions of a scene. Near the end of the Edo period when foreigners became widely known and seen, even interracial sex acts with foreign males were drawn and sold. (read more . . . )

A downblouse is a form of voyeurism enjoyed by those who are attracted to women, in which they seek a view of a woman's breasts down her shirt or blouse, particularly when she is bending over without regard for the fact that her shirt is loose around her neck. To the voyeur, downblousing is often considered most enjoyable when the breasts being viewed turn out to be bare; i.e., when the woman is not wearing a bra.

There are many websites that promote downblousing as pornography, but in real life, taking photographs of someone surreptitiously is illegal in some countries. Some people consider this brand of voyeurism to be a form of sexual abuse and an invasion of privacy if it is done without consent, which it often is. Others argue that women in public areas can claim only limited privacy expectations if parts of their unclothed anatomy are suddenly visible to onlookers, or even to photographers. The wide availability of camera phones may be the reason for a recent surge in downblouse photographs. (read more . . . )

A fluffer is a hired member of the crew of a pornographic movie whose role on the set is to sexually arouse the male participants prior to the filming of scenes requiring erections. Many adult film stars today maintain that fluffers are a thing of the past, needed in the '70s and '80s when the crew, shooting on celluloid, needed much more time to prepare a shot. Erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra have also taken part in replacing fluffers. Brittany Andrews states on her website that fluffers are now utilized only in "gang bang" scenarios. David Gordon of Camp Appleton uses 'fluffers' in every movie he directs - he reportedly once had 14 fluffers in the Green Room of his 1987 movie titled 'Where's My Fluffer?'.

There have been two movies titled The Fluffer. The first [3], a 2001 release, about a bisexual man with a crush on a gay porn star who is heterosexual outside of his video career. There is also a 2003 film [4] that has received less attention. (read more . . . )

Ero guro is a concept or movement or sub-genre, still somewhat loosely defined, that has emerged inside multiple schools of Japanese art and music. The words "ero guro" or "ero guro nansensu" are derived from the English words "erotic grotesque nonsense", and is sometimes shortened to simply guro (though this shortening is usually used to describe pornography). Regardless of nomenclature, the terms guro and ero guro are widely recognized as codewords denoting artwork that depicts extreme/bizarre violence (mutilation, dismemberment, scatology, etc.) in an erotic manner.

Ero guro's first distinct appearance began in 1920s and 1930s Japanese literature. This and other activities and movements were generally suppressed in Japan during World War II but re-emerged in the postwar period, especially in manga and music. Over time, the ero guro movement's influence expanded into parts of Japanese theatre, art, manga, and eventually film and music.

The typifying element of ero guro visual art is the macabre intermingled with sexual overtones. Often the erotic element, even when not explicit, is merged with grotesque themes and features—somewhat similar to the works of H. R. Giger. Others produce ero guro as a genre of Japanese pornography and hentai involving blood, gore, disfiguration, violence, mutilation, urine, enemas, or feces. (read more . . . )

Linda Susan Boreman (January 10, 1949April 22, 2002), better known by her stage name Linda Lovelace, was a pornographic actress in the 1972 film Deep Throat, who went on to leave the pornography industry and became a spokeswoman for the anti-pornography movement.

Deep Throat was notable for beginning a brief fad of porn chic; it was also the inspiration for Bob Woodward's name of his secret Watergate source, W. Mark Felt. Boreman later stated that she regretted her pornographic career and had been violently coerced into pornography by her then-husband, Chuck Traynor; she also renounced her stage name and reverted to using her real name in public. The popularity of the film, however, made her a cultural icon against her will, appearing in archive footage in many other films.

Although she later became an advocate against pornography, Boreman is still famous for her depictions of deep throat fellatio. While she continued to use the Lovelace name for commercial purposes, the first sentence of Boreman's book, Ordeal, and a statement she repeated for the rest of her life, was "My name is not Linda Lovelace."

Boreman attended Catholic schools, including St. John the Baptist in Yonkers, New York, and Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale, New York. Her father was a policeman. From an early age she was subject to strict discipline from her mother, a devout Roman Catholic who punished her for any misbehavior. When Boreman was 16, the family moved to Florida. In school, she was nicknamed "Miss Holy Holy" because she kept her dates at a safe distance. However, in her autobiography "Ordeal" (1980) and in the television show E! True Hollywood Story (2000), she revealed that she had given birth to an out-of-wedlock son when she was 20 years old in 1969, and that her mother put him up for adoption. Boreman mistakenly thought that the child was being put in foster care until she was ready to care for him and was heartbroken when she found out that she would never see him again. She moved to New York to start a new life in 1970. While there, she was involved in a devastating car accident that required a blood transfusion. She moved back to Florida to recover.

While in Florida, recovering at her parents' place, Boreman met Chuck Traynor, and became involved with him in 1969. The couple moved back to New York that same year, where Traynor became by turns her manager, pimp, and husband. (Boreman later wrote that Traynor had decided to get married so that spousal privilege would prevent her from being compelled to testify against him in court.) (read more . . . )

Softcore pornography is designed to arouse without being explicit

Softcore is a form of pornography, either video or nude glamour photography, that is less explicit than hardcore material in depicting or describing sexual behaviour. Softcore does not depict explicit sexual contact, but ranges from nudity to simulated intercourse. While both softcore and hardcore feature sexual situations with the intention of arousing the viewer, the key difference is that softcore does not clearly show aroused genitalia (including masturbation), ejaculation, or penetration (vaginal, anal and/or oral). Some softcore porn, especially recently, is more explicit in that penises or labia minora are shown. In milder forms of softcore porn, much of the nudity is implied, such as the handbra technique, with only limited nipple exposure.

After the formation of the MPAA rating system in the United States and prior to the 1980s, numerous softcore films, ranging from low to high production costs, were released to mainstream movie theatres especially drive-ins. Some, such as Emmanuelle, received positive reviews from noted critics such as Roger Ebert. Since the rise in popularity of home video in the 1980s, however, most softcore films have been restricted to home video releases or overnight timeslots on premium channels such as Cinemax and Showtime, and production values have dropped. Softcore films are carried by many mainstream video stores which often segregate them in an adults-only room. (read more . . . )

Extreme pornography is a term introduced by the UK Government as part of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill 2007. It refers to pornography depicting:

  • an act which threatens or appears to threaten a person’s life,
  • an act which results in or appears to result (or be likely to result) in serious injury to a person’s anus, breasts or genitals,
  • an act which involves or appears to involve sexual interference with a human corpse,
  • a person performing or appearing to perform an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal,

where (in each case) any such act, person or animal depicted in the image is or appears to be real.

The term covers staged acts, and applies whether or not the participants consent. Classified works are exempt, but an extract from a classified work, if the image was extracted for the purpose of sexual arousal, would not be exempt. The bill give examples of acts which would be covered: depictions of hanging, suffocation, or sexual assault involving a threat with a weapon; the insertion of sharp objects or the mutilation of breasts or genitals.

As a specific technical term, it appears to have been introduced in England following the death of Jane Longhurst in 2003 caused by Graham Coutts who was obsessed with such depictions downloaded from web sites dedicated to such content.

In 2005, the British government consulted on criminalising the possession of such images, following a campaign led by Jane Longhurst's mother and sister. A 50,000 signature petition was submitted to the government demanding a ban of "extreme internet sites promoting violence against women in the name of sexual gratification". (read more . . . )

Incest pornography is a genre of pornography involving the depiction of incest. It is illegal in many jurisdictions. For example, in Australia it is rated "Refused Classification" (RC). Despite this, it is widely available on the Internet.

It can be subdivided along several dimensions:

  • type of relationship:
    • sibling/sibling incest
    • parent/child incest
  • legality:

Many argue that it encourages the sexual abuse of children and rape, and religious conservatives see its presence on the internet as sinful.

Incest pornography can be produced by actual relatives, but the main type of this pornography simply uses actors of similar looks to suggest family relationship. Porn depicting sex between identical twins or real-life siblings is often regarded as mainstream, although it also exploits the same theme.

A good example of incest pornography is Double Czech, starring real life identical twin brothers, Jirka and Karel Bartok. Also, in the U.S. in 1976, twins Brooke & Taylor Young did same-sex incest in four films, "Teenage Twins" a/k/a "Twin Tarts", "Thunderbuns", "Double Your Pleasure", and "Sweet Cakes". The Golden Age of Porn refers to a brief modern period in the history of pornography, approximately from the late-sixties to the mid-1970s. The period is idealized as a time in history where difficult to treat or untreatable STDs had not achieved wide public notice and birth control and abortion permitted sex for pleasure without worries about unwanted pregnancies. This freedom was ostensibly reflected in the pornography industry, with adult movies and magazines approaching the mainstream and becoming increasingly visible. The trend is exemplified by Deep Throat (1972), probably the most successful porn film of all time.

The golden age was also typified by interactions with the contemporaneous second wave of feminism. Radical feminists allied with the religious right in opposing pornography, while other feminists were more concerned with ideas of sexual liberation and freedom from government intrusion into the growing industry. The origins of the Golden Age are typically associated with the massive widespread success of the movies Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones. These movies saw the blossoming of pornography in the mainstream consciousness, whereby drive-in theatres would take out full page newspaper ads to promote the latest adult features.

Along with these classics, filmmaker Bob Chinn, along with the priapic porn star John Curtis Holmes and his manager Bill Amerson raised adult film to a new art form, with the release of Johnny Wadd in 1971 and the subsequent release of six other films in the Johnny Wadd series. The Wadd series saw true character development, recurring characters, plausible story lines, and 35mm cinematography brought to the adult screen. Thanks to these films, John Holmes became a household name, and a "brand" that guaranteed box office success. (read more . . . )

Bondage pornography specializes in the depiction of sexual bondage or BDSM activities, as photographs, stories, movies, or drawings.

In the early 20th century, "Detective magazines" covertly provided a way of publishing bondage imagery. Comic books often featured characters being tied up and tying others up, particularly in "damsel in distress" plots.

There were also a very limited number of specialist fetish magazines which featured images of bondage, such as the famous Bizarre magazine published from 1946 to 1959 by the pioneering fetish photographer John Willie, and ENEG's Exotique magazine, published 1956 - 1959. These disappeared with a crackdown on pornography in the late 1950s.

Dedicated bondage magazines again became popular in America in the 1970s. Publishers of bondage magazines included Harmony Concepts, Inc. and the House of Milan, and Lyndon Distributors Limited. House of Milan have since been purchased by Lyndon Distributors Limited. These magazines were not generally available through mainstream distributors, and were sold either in sex shops or by mail order. They contained little advertising content, and were therefore entirely supported by the cover price.

Typically, each magazine consisted of several multi-page pictorials of tied-up women, often with a fictional narrative attached, and one fictional story of three or four pages in length. Sometimes pictorials were replaced by artwork by a fetish artist. Another type of magazine was the "compendium magazine", usually consisting of a large number of individual photographs drawn from previous magazines, without any linking story.

Because of their relatively small circulation, compared with mainstream pornography, most bondage magazines were printed in black and white, except for the cover and centerfold. In the 1980s and 1990s, experiments were made with adding more color content, but most magazine content remained black and white. (read more . . . )

Creampie, or internal cum shot, is a colloquial term in pornography to describe when a man ejaculates inside his partner's vagina or anus. In pornography vaginal sex is generally followed by a facial or other visible ejaculation. This, coupled with the fact that the wearing of condoms for vaginal and anal intercourse is now commonplace in pornography -- whereas a creampie by its very nature cannot be accomplished while wearing a condom -- makes ejaculating in the vagina a unique situation which can be advertised to attract viewers. An anal creampie (other terms: chocolate creampie, mudpie) is a variation where a man ejaculates in his partner's anus.

Several series of heterosexual pornographic movies have been themed around creampies. Film titles and box covers aside, the scenes in these films are not readily distinguishable from ordinary pornography. The majority of creampie scenes differ only in its ending, with the male actor remaining inserted inside the female actress during his orgasm. Immediately after the male withdraws, the camera will normally zoom-in for a close-up as the semen leaks from the female actor's orifice, to serve as proof that the act was completed as advertised. The male actor may sometimes facilitate this visual by partially withdrawing his penis during ejaculation so that the semen is left near the opening of the vagina. Sometimes, "creampie" specifically denotes something to be eaten -- not merely deposited in or near an orifice. In these creampie scenes, either the male actor will lick and suck his own semen from the woman's orifice or another female actor who was also involved in the scene will lick and suck the male actor's semen from the first woman's orifice. Piston Shot is a term used in pornography. It refers to the filming of closeup of genitals during sexual intercourse to record actual penetration. In 1980s, in many movies, screen-actors "pretended" to have sex while their, although naked, genitals were obscured with their physical position. Actual sex was recorded with different performers with closeup of their genitals while hiding their faces and rest of the bodies. Both kinds of scenes were later mixed with editing to give an illusion of credited actors having sex. (read more . . . )

In the terminology of movie-making, a hardcore insert is an insert, depicting vaginal or anal penetration in a film. The technique was much in use in the 1970s, when adult films were feature films that required women with acting abilities, at least for the lead roles. Many actresses found it unacceptable to perform actual sex (or at least anal sex), so the inserts were shot with body doubles. There was hardly a need for inserts in scenes of fellatio and cunnilingus performed by actresses, because depiction of oral-genital contact was then considered "semi-softcore". The practice also led to strange patterns. For example, some people believe that one Swedish actress, Marie Forså, used to have actual sex, but then the penetration scenes would be removed from the cut and replaced with inserts. Amateur pornography is a category of pornography that features models or actors performing without pay, or for whom this material is their first or only paid modeling work. The label is also sometimes applied to professionally-produced pornography which mimics genuinely amateur work.

Truly amateur pornography includes pornographic home movies and photographs shot by couples or individuals for their private entertainment, as well as amateur movies created for noncommercial distribution among friends. Several celebrities, most notably Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton and Tommy Lee, have seen their pornographic home movies illegally distributed commercially by the Internet Entertainment Group. Home movies may additionally be distributed commercially; for example, a group may throw a sex party mainly for the fun of it and agree to sell documentary footage of the events.

Professionally produced amateur pornography - often referred to as "pro-am porn" within the industry - involves professionals behind the camera but amateur actors, often either first time performers or relative newcomers to pornography. On some occasions a professional actor may appear with the amateur actors. One popular form of pro-am porn are series that purport to introduce new actors appearing for the first time in porn. They often feature a format in which a host introduces a model, interviews her/him about their past sex life, sexual interests, why she/he decided to appear in porn, etc. and they have the actress/actor perform various sex acts including masturbation, oral sex, intercourse, and sometimes lesbian or gay sex acts. In some cases the host may engage in sex with the model or a professional pornstar may be used instead. In some cases only amateur actors may be used in a scene such a boyfriend and girlfriend, husband and wife, or same-sex friends. (read more . . . )

The Miller test is the United States Supreme Court's test for determining whether speech or expression can be labeled obscene, in which case it is not protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and can be prohibited.

The Miller test was developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California. It has three parts:

  • Whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,
  • Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions specifically defined by applicable state law,
  • Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, and scientific value.

The third condition is also known as the (S)LAPS test ((Serious) Literary, Artistic, Political, Scientific). The work is considered obscene only if all three conditions are satisfied.

For legal scholars, several issues are important. One is that the test allows for community standards rather than a national standard. What offends the average person in Mobile, Alabama, may differ from what offends the average person in New York City. The relevant community, however, is not defined. (read more . . . )
