Portal is a town in Bulloch County, Georgia, United States. The population was 597 at the 2000 census.

Portal is located at 32°32′14″N, 81°55′54″W (32.537275, -81.931738)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), of which, 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.69%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 597 people, 232 households, and 167 families residing in the town. The population density was 343.1 people per square mile (132.5/km²). There were 254 housing units at an average density of 146.0/sq mi (56.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 82.24% White, 15.24% African American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.

There were 232 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,268, and the median income for a family was $34,000. Males had a median income of $24,583 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,514. About 8.2% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 15.6% of those age 65 or over.

  • Matthew L. Gibson - (1985 - ) Competed in a national Pokémon tournament and placed in the top 13. Matthew graduated from Georgia Southern University in December 2007 with a B.A. Degree in Geology. Matthew is currently co-authoring a paper for publication in describing and naming a new genus and species of fossil pontoporiid dolphin.
  • Katherine A. Mincey - the valedictorian and star student of Portal High School, class of 2008. Plans to attend Georgia Southern University as a 1906 scholar and major in Biology
