Port Regis Prep School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Port Regis School is a preparatory school for boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 13. The school is located in 140 acres of the beautiful countryside of Dorset in Southern England.

The school is currently headed by Peter Dix and the deputy head Julie Moores. Two famous former pupils are Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips, children of Anne, Princess Royal, and grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

[edit] Boarding Houses:

The school consists of roughly 400 pupils, with gender mix at around 50%. There are five boarding houses:

Stalbridge:- For boys aged 7-10
Talbot:- For boys aged 10-12
Prichard Hall:- For boys aged 12-13
Huxley:- For girls aged 7-12
Grosvenor:- For girls aged 12-13
These ages are guidelines however.

The common entrance pass percentage for the last 5 years has been 100%. The school offers a range of extra-curricular opportunities. The approach in the classroom, as elsewhere, is very much one of praise and encouragement, and star totals, for good work and effort, are read out at Assembly every two or three weeks. Quarter- and Three-Quarter-term Assessments for effort and attainment are made known to parents, who also receive comprehensive reports at the end of each term. [1]

[edit] History

Dr Praetorius' School, founded in 1881 in Weymouth Street, London, moved to Folkestone a few years later, and in 1921 to Kingsgate, Broadstairs, in the grounds of which stood an ancient arch, erected by Earl Holland to commemorate a chance landing by Charles II in 1683. This provided the idea for the name of the School, Port Regis, "Gate of the King". In 1940 Port Regis evacuated to Bryanston School in Blandford. After a brief stay at the Earl of Verulam's home at Gorhambury the School moved in 1947 to Motcombe Park, one mile from Shaftesbury in Dorset, where it has been ever since. In 1972 the freehold of the property was acquired.
