Port Kennedy is an outer southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located within the City of Rockingham.
Port Kennedy is built on Becher Point and because of its geomorphological history it is home to an unusual wetland formation, called the Becher Wetland Suite. These wetlands are linear in form rather than circular and have formed in dune swales parallel to the coast. Some wetlands have been absorbed int the Port Kennedy golf course and the remainder are protected in the Port Kennedy Scientific Park. The Threatened Ecological Community FCT19, Sedgelands in Holocene Dune Swales, is known to occur in these wetlands.
Port Kennedy Primary School opened in 1996 and is part of the Education Department's Peel District.
Located in a new residential area to the south of the City of Rockingham, the school serves a young community of social and economical diversity. The school population has grown rapidly.
The school's permanent facilities include general teaching areas, four pre primary centres arranged into three blocks, each with a wet area and storeroom. A separate arts block contains music room, and an art room with two stores and a kiln room.
The Administration and Library each has its own building. An undercover area with the school canteen and sports store, and a Service block complete the purpose built facilities. A number of demountable / transportable classrooms are on the school site. Grounds facilities include a fenced multi-purpose hard court area, an oval with cricket pitch, cricket nets, soccer goals and football posts, grassed and paved play areas and several sets of adventure play equipment with sand pits. All buildings and grounds facilities are fully used. Approximately fifty-five staff serve the school's educational, clerical gardening and maintenance supported by EDWA Central Services and District services of School Psychologist, Aboriginal Liaison Officer and School Welfare Officer.
The school's education program is comprehensive and balanced, based on the 8 learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Society & Environment, Technology & Enterprise, Health & Physical Education, the Arts and L.O.T.E. Indonesian. From 2005, all learning will be outcomes-based as detailed in the Curriculum Framework and the Outcomes and Standards Framework by the Education Department of Western Australia. An opening enrolment in 1996 of 300 students has increased to over 675 in 2006.
