[edit] New version

I have to say, I don't like the new version. The lightning flash hurts me eyes, and the gradients just look too photshopped. My initial image was in the vein of Image:Portalfilm2.jpg, I was hoping to unify the portals somewhat. Hiding The wikipedian meme 22:43, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, it looks photoshopped because... well... it is :). Not having a convienient forked lightning bolt, I had to improvise.
My main problem with the initial image was that it was too "sectional" - three bits with no connection (the same problem is there with the filmportal image, although it's more even and thus slightly better), plus it was very washed out on top of that. If you're going to have a banner, it should (1) Be holistic and (2) match the colour scheme of the portal itself (both of which I took care to do with my version).
Suggestions welcome. - SoM 22:53, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
See, I thought my one did what you said better than your one did, but that puts us in a pissing contest. :) The connection between the three sections is that they are the three elements of comics, balloons, text and image, and also that the font on the text was the font from the Krazy Kat strip from which the image was sourced, and the colouration was based on the portal colours. Still, given we never seem to agree on visual aspects, perhaps it's best if we rotate the banners? ;) Every other day, week or month? Perhaps we could commision a few more from the community and rotate one a day through the month? The bugpowder blog does that.Hiding The wikipedian meme 23:26, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for taking so long to reply - I was hoping someone else would reply, then the Daredevil & Thor fiascos drained my enthusiasm again...
Anyway - I wouldn't want a rotation, I'd rather a "None of the Above" option to that, pick one and stick with it. Getting other people's opinions and/or submissions sounds like a good idea... - SoM 18:39, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Just throwing my two cents in (actually worth 2.8 cents, according to The New York Times, since the price of copper has been going up).... SoM's is slicker in color and lettering, but slightly generic. User:Hiding's tells more of a story that communicates what the Portal is about. I'd go with a combination, and maybe suggest adding Superman or Spider-Man or something otherwise instantly iconic, in order to show it's not just about comic strips. Hope this helps. --Tenebrae 21:16, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Certainly, I could knock up a version with Spider-Man or a montage of characters or something - but I doubt we'd be allowed to use it on fair use grounds, that's the thing. Certainly, even if we could maybe do so, someone could pull a {{Orphaned fairuse replaced}} on us, that's the problem.
Basically, I know mine is "slightly generic", but I didn't see an alternative route to take. As it is, it's sort of a loose homage to the Dark Knight Returns cover or any of the various lightning themes in comics, but... - SoM 00:27, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Ah! The Reese's Peanut Butter Cup approach! Schizophrenically yours, -- Tenebrae 21:16, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
  • We could have a contest, across Wikipedia, with voting and stuff, a sort of Banner idol if you will? I'll abide with SoM's for the while, until we come up with something better. Hiding Talk 20:10, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
