Ponneri is located at 13.32° N 80.2° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 10 metres (32 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Ponneri had a population of 24,205. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Ponneri has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 66%. In Ponneri, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The town has a number of histyle residancial area sankarnagar,t.v.puram . The railway station is one of the longest station next to central station. There is an electrical service provider called as eswari electricals next to railway station where all the people who living in & around come and get their needs for all electrical service . sankarnagar nagar is one of the good residential area in ponneri. Pulicat is 19 km east of Ponneri from ponneri.

Thiru Venkata Puram, Venpakkam and Shankar Nagar are the traditional villages in Ponneri. These are most suggested places for living in Ponneri. B. N. Kandigai (Bangaru Naidu Kandigai) is the most famous village in Ponneri, in fact it is often called as cradle of Ponneri. Most educated people in Ponneri are from this village, many foreigners have visited this village.Near to railway station Aladu village.Dam is famous in that place.
