[edit] Fictional character biography
Baba is an Aqualish mercenary. He is a good friend of the mad Doctor Evazan. He hails from the planet of Ando, the Aqualish homeworld. Ponda Baba attacks Luke Skywalker at the Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley (portrayed in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope). This action causes Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was traveling along with Skywalker, to sever the Aqualish's arm with his lightsaber, causing the Aqualish great pain.
Baba is one of the first of many Star Wars characters to lose a limb (or hand).
[edit] Action Figure
When the original Kenner action figure for Baba was released, the then-unnamed alien was called simply "Walrus Man". His proper name (as well as the name of his species) was given in 1989 for his appearance in a Star Wars role-playing game. [1]
[edit] Other Works
In the special Robot Chicken tribute episode to Star Wars, there is a sketch portraying Ponda not as a mercenary but as a draftsman who simply is taking his lunch break at "that new cantina across the street." His attempts to smooth over accidentally bumping into Luke are for naught as he does not speak Galactic Basic, instead merely attempting to ask him where he gets his hair cut. The claims of a criminal past are simply a drunken prank by his coworker Dr. Evazan, claims which Ponda desperately tries to refute. The loss of Ponda's arm results in him eventually losing his job instead of receiving the promotion he had sought.
