Talk:Pomfret (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Does anybody reading this page know of the origins of Pomfret as a surname?
Yes. The name derives from "Pontefract" in Yorkshire. I have visited there several times whilst researching my family tree, as my surname is "Pomfret". The Library and Museum in Pontefract has quite a lot of useful information on the history of Pontefract (Pomfret). Especially on Pontefract Castle which was a royalist castle in the days of Charles I and when it was captured by Oliver Cromwell, he had it demolished and sold off the contents.
I also have a question re the Pomfret fish. Does anyone know how it came to be named Pomfret?
