[edit] Your contribution to the George Vancouver article

In the George Vancouver article you tell us of a disciplinary hearing Vancouver faced upon his return. I have a biography of Vancouver, mind you, one intended for younger readers. And it makes no mention of any disciplinary measures. It attributes the quite life he lead following his return to poor health.

[edit] Miramichi River etc.

Hi, just read your comments re. the changes I had made to Miramichi River and the Miramichi River valley entry that was created. These can be undone fairly easily by just clicking the last appropriate version and resaving, and putting a redirect where appropriate. I had actually started out by creating some of the tributary river articles and things started to snowball as I tried to figure out how to fit things together. I actually hadn't even looked at the page history and my apologies if I had offended you in any way as I didn't realize you were the major content generator. My personal connection to northern NB is through Campbellton and the north shore so I don't profess to be a Miramichi expert by any means. Plasma east 02:30, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rich politicians

I've reverted your addition of Richest British politicians to articles on offices and officeholders–I can't see how the two are related enough to justify such a link. Mackensen (talk) 19:56, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

I think it's a non-sequiter at best, and POV at worst. There's no real link between personal wealth and any specific office–there is arguably a link between personal wealth and political activity, particularly before the twentieth century. I'm not convinced that such an article is necessary at all; I also think there are several problems with it:

  • The list is based on probate records (as you note), which has no correlation with the time in which a politician held office
  • The list makes no differentiation between realized and precarious income, which means you can't tell a great landholder from an upstart businessman
  • The list seems to be unsourced and is probably original research
  • The list doesn't take into account inflation, nor does it provide any sense of scale, save in relation to itself.

Please read my comment more carefully. As it happens, I'm also a paid subscriber to the DNB and I figured that the information came from there. I don't doubt the contributors either–my father authored the entry on Dr. John Moore. That being said, the list itself is original research. I'm not aware of a good index for inflation–I don't think that it becomes a serious problem until after the First World War. My concern about scale was related to that point–Cecil Rhodes' five million pounds were worth far more then than they are now, especially as compared to the average working-class family. I think you also need to set criteria for inclusion. For example, although British, Rhodes might be better described as a South African politician. I think a starting point would be all cabinet holders who entered politics after 1820 or so. Mackensen (talk) 22:22, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Do you have a source for the assertations you have made about Jelicoe's handling of the Battle of Jutland? To say he certainly made no mistakes without citing a source for this view is not NPOV. Clearly, many people feel he did make mistakes - the article should reflect that shouldn't it? Also, I'm not sure this page is the best one for a detailed discussion of questions about Jutland. Hi, you seem to have edited quite a bit about the Romanovs. I have just moved a page to this title Grand Duke Peter Nicolaievich of Russia and expanded it a little. Could you just check it out, and make sure it's Ok. Its not really my subject, but I had just finished a book where his wife was mentioned which is how I knew the page was formerly misnamed - at least I hope it was! Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article North Shore, New Brunswick, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
